8 Tips and Reminders for Making your Skincare Products Perform at its Best

I’ve had several posts about skincare now and I felt the need to share some tips and reminders to ensure that we don’t get disappointed or frustrated with our products. It’s not a surprise that I’ve encountered a lot of people who somehow lose confidence or trust with their beauty products or their skincare regimen over time. In defense of skincare (as I have been a brand manager for this industry in the past years), it is unfortunate that improper handling or too much expectations cause some, if not most, of this disappointments.

So here are some tips and reminders to all skincare users, just in case we sometimes forget…

 1. PROPER STORAGE. Skincare items including make-up or cosmetics are sensitive to heat. Drastic changes in temperature and exposure to heat can make your skincare lose their efficacy, change viscosity or texture, and worse, make them oxidize faster. This means that the product you spent for will lose their capability to work as you expect them to. Don’t let them get exposed to heat. Check if your vanity table or cabinet is reached by sunlight at any time of the day. If so, then you better consider moving your cabinet to a different part of the room or make sure your curtains don’t allow too much sunlight in.

In my experience with managing skincare brands, I’ve encountered customer complaints about their cream that became watery or changed color and the like. The truth is, a lot of consumers forget that these products are supposed to be handled with care as well. Upon purchasing your beauty products, do you leave them in the car for a few hours while you shop some more or have dinner? Do you put it inside the car with you or in the boot? Do you keep it out of heat or sunlight?

2. EXPIRY DATE. Skincare products are perishables; they EXPIRE. It’s very rare, though, to see an expiry date stamped on the products. So how do you know if it’s expired? Check the manufacturing date, which is normally embossed, printed, stamped or marked behind the bottle, under the box. It can be on the sticker with the manufacturer or distributer info. From the manufacturing date, it takes 3 years, in general, to expire. Organic products, however, expire faster, probably within 2 years or less.

Beauty products have expiration date

Once your product is expired, stop using it. It may or may not cause your skin harm but it won’t work as you expect them to which will lead to disappointment.

 3. LIFE AFTER OPENING. It’s not only the expiry date that you should watch out for but also the product’s “life after opening”. As soon as a product is exposed to air, it starts to reach expiration earlier than the expiry date. You should look at the bottle or jar label to check within how many months do you need to consume the product. Some can last up to 24 months while some can be as short as 4 months, again, shorter life for organic items. If you do take slower to finish the product before the last month of its life, it’s best to stop using it. Life after opening of most products are within reasonable time frame for you to finish IF you apply it as directed. For example, if it says ‘apply in the morning and evening’ then you should be able to consume a 50ml cream within 4 months. But if you get lazy and only apply once a day, then chances are you will take longer than 4 months.

Pay attention to ‘Life after Opening’ on the label

 4. ORDER OF APPLICATION. There’s a good reason why your beauty consultant gives you step-by-step application, from toner to moisturizer. Absorption of the products by the skin is important in ensuring that you get the most out of your skincare routine. Toner comes first because of its low viscosity (viscosity, in layman’s terms, is that notion of ‘thickness’; example, maple syrup has higher viscosity than water). Since the toner is light or less viscous, when you apply a thicker product such as serum, the skin will still absorb the serum. If you apply your moisturizer first before the toner, the skin might not be able to absorb your toner completely.

Aside from absorption of the skin, proper order of application is also important in making the products work as a team. Some serums are formulated to increase the efficacy of products to be applied after it. A good example is Perricone MD Cold Plasma, which acts as a serum and booster for other products on top of it. If in doubt which goes first, just look at the viscosity of the products, apply the lightest before the thickest products and you’ll do just fine.

 5. EFFICACY MAY NOT BE FOREVER. Have you experienced using a product, loved the results, then after some time, you notice that it doesn’t change your skin anymore? Don’t fret, it’s not that the product is bad; it’s possible that it had already done the maximum it could for your skin. It doesn’t mean that your product stopped working. Also remember that your skin condition changes. A product for your oily skin may not work anymore if your skin changes to normal/ dry skin. As time goes by, our skin also changes. This is why there are specific products for certain condition and age groups. What you use during your teenage days will not be suitable when you reach your 30’s, right?

And just because you don’t see great improvements anymore means that you should change your product. Take for example an anti-wrinkle item. Maybe during the first month, you notice that there’s a significant reduction in wrinkles then no change on the 2nd month. Should you change? Not necessarily. Your anti-wrinkle item may not be erasing the wrinkles left but if you don’t see more wrinkles developing, this means that your product is fighting off new ones; it maintains the current condition of your skin.

6. SAMPLES and SACHETS. I’m sure you also get those sachets or samples from beauty counters or even from magazines. When you do decide to open one, don’t keep it too long. Consume it within a few days or maybe within a week. Sachets don’t have covers so they oxidize faster. Best to put it inside an airtight container once opened.

Some samples do stamp their manufacturing date or expiry date so you are aware if you can still use them.

Count 3 years from manufacturing date for expiry

Some sachets print manufacturing and expiry dates

7. CONSISTENCY is KEY. Regular application of products as directed is important in seeing optimal results out of your skincare. People who spend money on beauty products then get lazy to use them sometimes surprise me. Think of your skin as your stomach; it needs to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner and consume water. Those serums, essences or creams are food for your skin. Without which, the skin becomes unhealthy or ‘sick’.
If you need to travel, take small amounts of your products with you. I find it very useful to have mini containers for my products. This is also why I enjoy free minis from my beauty shopping. Travel-size products are very useful so don’t take them for granted.

Use travel containers for your products

Free travel-size products are very useful

8. BEAUTY IS NOT JUST SKIN-DEEP. Although skincare products are essential to our skin’s health, take note that they can’t do magic tricks. The condition of our skin reflects our internal health. If you truly want youthful, healthy skin, you must start from within — your eating habits, diet and overall lifestyle. Have you ever seen a sick person who has radiant, glowing skin?

Watch what you eat, set aside time to do some exercise, have a happy, social life and keep a positive outlook. Your skin will definitely show how beautiful you are inside. And don’t forget your daily skincare routine. Combined with good habits and lifestyle, beauty products can do wonders for your skin!

Estēe Lauder Advanced Night Repair – Change your Skin every Night

This is one of those very rare instances that I’d have to say that advertising convinced me to purchase a beauty product. I’m the type who would normally go around the beauty shop, try items here and there then only make the decision to buy. But for once, after seeing ads continuously, reading good reviews online, I decided to finally give this popular product a shot.

A few years back when I was working for a company located along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, I walk around Sogo department store from Mondays to Fridays during lunchtime. It’s actually quite nice to shop at Sogo because they have practically everything that I look for: baby clothes, baby shoes, milk powder, office clothes, shoes, cosmetics, stationeries and more. Sogo probably has the widest baby and kids section in 1 floor within Kuala Lumpur.

And so one Saturday afternoon, I went shopping again at Sogo KL. I excitedly visited the Estee Lauder counter and checked out the available gift sets. What did I want to get? The Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II and a night cream for my mother-in-law. I’ve been seeing ads of the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair for years. So when aging seemed to catch up with my skin (fine lines, uneven skin tone, noticeable pores, dull appearance, roughness), I knew I had to crank up my skincare regimen with a powerful anti-aging serum. And what do you know; those 2-page spreads on magazines caught me. I also did some research online from customers/ bloggers who have tried the product and, yes, I’m convinced.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair

I’ve been using the product for 3 weeks now and I’m very happy with the improvement on my skin. It’s true that I wake up to better skin every morning. The most evident change I’ve felt was the ease of makeup application on a smoother skin. I used to apply several layers of cosmetics on my face before going to work but now I can get away with skipping one or two when I’m in a hurry. I even apply thinner liquid foundation because of more even skin tone.

I guess one of the great things with this product is that I only need to apply it in the evening and yet I get wonderful benefits. Like what the brand says, this is ‘The power to change your skin – every night!” I only use between 2-3 drops all over my face, using my middle and ring fingers, and I’m sure this 50ml will last for more than 3 months.

The power to change your skin — every night!

The science behind this popular product is based on 2 discoveries: 1) purification and, 2) Lack of Sleep Accelerates the Look of Aging.

What the brand says:

Estee Lauder scientists were among the first to understand a critical nighttime cellular repair, Catabolysis, and determined that this natural purification process peaks in cells at night and is pivotal to skin’s natural repair. This led our scientists to develop a breakthrough technology, ChronoluxCBTM.

Skin renewal expert Estee Lauder collaborated with sleep experts from Case Western Reserve University, a world-renowned centre of excellence in dermatological research. The result was lack of sleep not only causes visible signs of aging but also affects skin’s natural repair processes. The study showed that, for the first time, that lack of sleep can accelerate visible signs of skin aging.

Poor quality of sleep is associated with:

  • Acceleration of fine lines
  • Increased vulnerability to dryness and dehydration
  • Uneven skin tone

With Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, say good night to:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Tired looking skin
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Rough, dry skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dullness

And say good morning to:

  • Firmness and elasticity
  • Youthful-looking skin
  • Translucent radiance
  • Even skin toneHydrated skin
  • Fine softness
  • Suppleness

I am guilty of not having sufficient sleep almost daily. I sleep past midnight and get up at 6:15am. Not easy to sleep early when your child sleeps late. But with the product claims of this Estee Lauder product, I am hopefully on my way to continuously improving skin.

I also got the Estee Lauder Nutritious Night Vita-Mineral Intense Nourishing Crème for my mother-in-law. I truly believe that everyone should recharge their evening skincare regimen since this is the time when our skin rejuvenates itself.

Estee Lauder Nutritious Night Creme

Estee Lauder was selling the Advanced Night Repair Serum and Nutritious Night Crème in a set that comes with free 4 minis. So here’s all that I got that day:

Estee Lauder ANR and Nutritious Night Creme with 4 free minis

These are the 4 minis in the set – 30ml Nutritious Foam Cleanser, 30ml Nutritious Energy Lotion, 15ml Nutritious Day Cream and 5ml Advanced Night Repair Eye.  Great value gifts with the set!

Estee Lauder minis

My beauty loot:

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair – RM350 for 50ml

Estee Lauder Nutritious Night Crème – RM240 for 50ml

FREE items – 4 minis as mentioned above

RM50 cosmetic voucher from Sogo (valid for Sogo card members – RM10 for every RM100 spent at the Beauty Hall)

Yes, I got a RM50 voucher from this loot. I’ll share a short blog later on about how I wisely spent this RM50 Sogo voucher!

Fashion Icon Designer Outlet Unveils ZERO is Not a Size

I’ve always enjoyed watching fashion shows. I still remember my younger years of working for a global lingerie brand where I was screening models, preparing for fashion shows, dressing up models, running up and down…oh, it was such a thrill. There’s this certain of nervousness about how the show will turn out, what the guests will think of it, what the bosses will say, will somebody trip, are the models perfect enough and all. So much of hard work is involved in a fashion show yet it only takes less than an hour (or even half an hour) for it to get judged, scrutinized or praised. This is why I have high respect for teams who organize fashion shows because I know it’s damn hard.

I had the opportunity to witness a fashion show worthy of recognition and support. Nestled in an exclusive haven at Persiaran Hampshire, Fashion Icon Designer Outlet held a fashion show themed “Zero is Not a Size” on 28th September 2013. Zero is Not a Size was held in support of Women’s Aid Organization (WAO) to highlight women’s health issues and encourage a positive body image mindset to women for the enhancement of self confidence regardless of body size and shape.

Fashion Icon believes that the joy in style and fashion should be enjoyed by everyone regardless of size, shape and color. “A perfect body and a perfect shape is not everything,” as confidently said by Ms. Regine Wong, Fashion Icon Designer Outlet General Manager. Honestly, I am one of those women who are very much bothered by their size. As I’ve mentioned in several of my stories, my post-pregnancy size is somehow stuck and I’ve been trying so hard to get rid of those unsightly tummy fats. Not that I’m less confident but my size is somehow holding me back to explore more fashionable styles in the way I dress. I salute Fashion Icon and WAO for making this event an education about confidence no matter what size.

Guests and customers were entertained by live vocal performances by lovely singers Ezza Afiqa, Ida Mariana and Joy Victor. They were fashionable and chic, not to mention cool and friendly as I managed to snap a few shots with them…

Fashion Icon houses a vast collection of designer items such as bags, shoes, wallets, accessories, women’s wear, men’s wear and fragrances. Bags and shoes were very gorgeous. Take a look at these fabulous items…

These blue and red Prada bags are simply beautiful!

Lovely shoes by GAS…

Chloe sunglasses…

WAO had a Shop for Good Cause display that sells T-Shirts featuring a work of art by a Malaysian artist at only RM45. The shirt is quite cool, showcasing an art that feels like an actual painting on shirt. I grabbed a black one in LARGE size (!) and I had to remind myself that not fitting on a medium size anymore shouldn’t make me feel bad.

To posh ladies and fashionable men, check out Fashion Icon Designer Outlet at Persiaran Hampshire in Kuala Lumpur. Not only will you find great designer items but you’ll be treated to great service beyond your color, shape or size.

Malaysian Women’s Weekly Style Workshop at M&S Suria KLCC (part 2)

The Malaysian Women’s Weekly team invited the Style Workshop guests to some refreshments served by Marks & Spencer just right in front of their food hall. We were all treated to delicious bread, tea, jam and more from M&S.

And so I went snooping around the Marks & Spencer’s bigger and better outlet at Suria KLCC, Concourse Level. To make it easier for us to spot style picks, the MWW team cleverly placed yellow cards on hangers of their selected clothes.

The new M&S outlet is filled with very stylish collection for casual wear, office wear and more. There are wide selection of colors — from classic yet elegant hues to daring and trendy ones. I loved the group display of different colors and looks in every corner on mannequins which presented combination of clothes and styles that make it easy for shoppers to get fashion ideas. Just look at these gorgeous displays…

So where did I spend most of my time (and my shopping money) that day? (Drum roll…)

At the lingerie section!

During the mini-fashion show by the MWW team, some guests were concerned about how to look great in clothes if they have flabby tummy or excess mid-part fats (ok, it’s kinda difficult to word it nicely). Aside from the great tips from MWW, the M&S team also suggested using tummy control intimate wear to have that instant sculpted tummy!

There were different kinds of Magicwear inside the lingerie section. You can find full corset, full panty, boy leg cut and more. I picked this black waist cincher which has a very light and soft material. You can immediately tell that it will be comfortable to wear.

Take a closer look at what the front label says:

Secrets Slimming

Magicwear

No VPL (no visible panty lines)

Waist cincher

Smooths & sculpts waist & tummy

Lifts bum

Look slimmer in seconds!

With COOL COMFORT technology

FIRM control (just what I need)

88% of our test wearers saw an immediate reduction in measurements

And the back label:

COOL COMFORT keeps you cool all day (so this is not the typical corset material that makes you feel hot)

What is Magicwear technology? Side seam free, zoned control to shape your silhouette

Flattens tummy and shapes waist

Integrated sling for bottom lift

Interesting enough, right? I knew I gotta have one! My mummy fats seem to be stuck on my hips and tummy so this is just a great item to have in my wardrobe. I haven’t tested it yet but I’m having an important evening soon and this instant solution to my tummy will be my best friend! To my fellow hot mummies/ chicks who just can’t get rid of those tummy flabs, check out this Magicwear Waist Cincher.

Malaysian Women’s Weekly Style Workshop at M&S Suria KLCC (part 1)

Yes, I admit it, I’m not really fashion-savvy and with the additional weight I’ve gained post-pregnancy, I’ve become very reserved when it comes to choosing clothes or experimenting with different looks. Sigh, if only I can shed extra 15 kilos off by working so hard…

So when I heard about Malaysian Women’s Weekly Style Workshop, I knew I have to check it out. Would I miss this chance to meet and greet MWW Editor, Elaine Kwong, and Fashion Editor, Sabrina Salehuddin? And, of course, I also wanted to see the new Marks & Spencer outlet at Suria KLCC.

Fresh and feeling great on a Saturday morning, I was in front of M&S by 10am. The facade of the store is warm and welcoming.

Marks & Spencer at Suria KLCC, Concourse Level

The lovely morning started with greetings and introduction from Elaine. They will share 6 different looks with gorgeous models wearing Marks & Spencer items.

MWW Editor, Elaine Kwong

The pretty Ms Sabrina sporting a sweet smile before the model parade of styles…

STYLED LOOK #1:

First up was model Olga, wearing ox-blood-color skirt, white blouse, fitted blazer and black ankle boots.

I like this look because it’s something that I can see myself wearing on a normal working day. It’s sleek, stylish yet corporate. It’s even something I can wear to a business presentation with potential partners or board of directors. I’m just not sure if I can get away with this cutting of skirt as I have mummy-tummy and mummy-hips to hide.

STYLED LOOK #2:

Second look was with model Chloe, wearing printed dress with multi-color patterns in elbow-length sleeves and a pair of peep-toe black ankle boots.

I find this dress nice to wear for a normal office day, and as suggested by MWW team, can be thrown over with a jacket to make it more suitable for the office. Not recommendable for someone with my body shape, though, as my mummy tummy will surely pop out. But Elaine gave a tip of looking for a dress like this with folds at the right places to hide tummy fats.

STYLED LOOK #3:

Olga walked up in a lovely style of white-collared blouse, black cropped pants red jacket, black high-heeled shoes while carrying a small blue purse.

I’d say this is my favorite look. I loved the flair of this red color jacket over black-and-white attire. If I were to flaunt this style, I’d be wearing a pair of peep-toe, sling-back shoes as I really get uncomfortable with closed shoes especially pointed, high heels. But overall, this is such a lovely style and I’d be shopping one of these days to get this look!

STYLED LOOK #4:

Chloe came back wearing a cute, long-sleeved big shirt with Panda face, over full-length black leggings, animal print boots and a big bag.

This one’s for that casual, chic look and will look good for those with slim, long legs. Sabrina also showed other possible combinations such as this grayish, jeweled blouse.

I think this is lovely and I just wish I still have my old legs when I was only 49kg! If I were to wear this look, I’d be using a longer blouse to hide my oversized-hips and butt then glam it up with gold or silver open-toe wedges.

STYLED LOOK #5: Olga wore an animal print, one-piece fitted dress, gold necklace and black, closed, high-heel shoes while carrying a small, long-strapped purse.

This can be good for office wear but, personally, I’m not a big fan of animal print on dresses. I’d be alright with small splashes or accents of animal print but not on a whole piece. But this will still be great for ladies who love animal print even those who are not as slim as a model like Olga or Chloe. Of course, for those with bigger frame, I think that a small purse like this will not work well as it can accentuate your body size against the purse. I’d go for a mid-size or bigger-sized bag.

STYLED LOOK #6:

Last look from Chloe was a 2-piece ensemble of a printed white blouse and a printed black skirt. Shoes were peep-toe ankle boots.

I’m not used to seeing printed blouse and skirt with different patterns but this one is quite chic. I don’t think I can get away with the length of this skirt, though, so if I were to try a print-on-print look, it will probably be a pair of cropped pants.

Here are more looks from Malaysian Women’s Weekly Style Workshop on mannequins:

This workshop made me think about experimenting more with my fashion style despite the mummy tummy. Great tips and styles from Elaine Kwong and Sabrina Salehuddin! Thanks to MWW and M&S!

Okay, I’ve blabbed too much! I have to split this story into 2 and share more about what I did at Marks & Spencer after the Style Workshop: snooping and taking photos around the vast clothing collections, discovery of an instant solution to my bulging tummy and what I bought that day!

Sunshine September for Autism Awareness at Suria KLCC

“We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” – Mother Teresa

Last Saturday, I found myself wandering around the lovely grounds of Suria KLCC. This place never fails to give me a feeling of thankfulness to have the ability to appreciate its grandeur. Maybe to some Malaysians, this is just an ordinary view, a simple building in this part of Kuala Lumpur. But to me, this place signifies magnificence, an enduring evidence of what this country has accomplished through the years.

Yes, it truly is a blessing to behold such beauty. But in this life and at this very moment, there are people who are less fortunate, children who are fighting for their lives and for their dreams. Suria KLCC, together with other companies, has put together an event to help these children — Sunshine September for Autism Awareness.

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills, typically appears within the first 3 years of life. It currently affects the lives and families of 1 in 600 Malaysian children. It is associated with rigid routines or repetitive behaviors such as obsessively following schedules or playing certain toys in a monotonous manner, etc. It is a spectrum disorder, variable in severity and in symptoms across individuals. It makes life hard and difficult for autistic patients and their families, health care providers and their teachers.

In Malaysia, persons with autism are referred to NASOM (National Autism Society of Malaysia) by government hospitals and private practitioners. NASOM has experienced a 30% increase in their intake for the past 3 years. Yet the waiting list gets longer each day.

I urge everyone to visit the Concourse Level in Suria KLCC and extend support to NASOM. There are so many children out there who need help, even a small effort can go a long way. There’s a big setup of Sunshine September with several booths where we can extend whatever support we can. At the HerWorld booth, for example,  simply purchase an October issue and you will also get a 250ml The Body Shop gentle eye makeup remover.

There is also a memory game booth where you can win a gift.

This booth offers Sunshine September memorabilia at very affordable prices. There are thumb drives, T-shirts, garment bags and more.

Look at this purple plush toy, very adorable at only RM20.

There are also some paintings for sale. Gorgeous ones, really nice for home decor.

There are a lot of participating outlets within Suria KLCC who are contributing proceeds to NASOM this September. For a complete list of stores, you can check out the purple booklet distributed within the concourse level.

Let’s share some love, everyone. Visit the concourse level at Suria KLCC. And if it’s already too late by the time you stumbled upon this blog, please call +603 2382 2828 or www.suriaklcc.com.my to inquire how you can support NASOM and help autistic children.

Alternatively, you can directly contact NASOM at +603 7886 8233 or visit www.nasom.com.my

My 8 De-stressing Habits that Keep Me Sane and Happy

One of the important things I learned in life is that there will be a cause of stress everywhere we go, in whatever we do, whether at work, at home, at the road…wherever, whenever. To wish for a stress-free life is just wishing not to live at all. What I’ve accepted is that I either change the way I look at the things around me or my life will be unhappy and stressful.

I’m actually quite surprised to meet people who just choose to focus on the bad and stressful things rather than counting the good things they have. Work will always be tough and full of challenges especially when you’ve reached a certain level of position where you hold heavy responsibilities. I believe that there’s always a choice for everyone. If you don’t want to accept this set of duties that also come with some causes for stress, then there’s a choice for you to either leave that job or take a lower position. But complaining about everything to your colleagues or friends or relatives can become pointless if it becomes a daily habit.

The world wouldn’t change for us; we can only change ourselves. I choose to be in control of my life as much as I can, and I don’t want stress to be on top of my daily life. I’ve had my share of stressful years and I’ve realized that it’s just impossible to be happy unless I change or improve myself. So I am pleased to share 8 useful habits that I’ve developed through the years. Hope these can be useful to people facing a stressful life, especially working mothers like me:

1. Read.

Reading is a great way to take my mind off from the daily challenges of work while at the same time, gives me additional knowledge that I won’t get from just spending more time on ‘stressing’ myself about work.  I cannot imagine what my life would be if I don’t spend time reading. It doesn’t have to be reading novels or thick books at all. I regularly read Female magazine and Women’s Weekly where I get the latest beauty and fashion buzz. Of course, I don’t want to miss the celebrity articles and health news. And although I am not in the beauty industry anymore, I am still inclined (or hooked) to finding out the latest beauty products and reviews.

I also read Archie books! Well, you might say, ‘grow up!’ but Archie comic books are one of those classics that you won’t mind reading. When I was younger, reading an Archie comic book is already a luxury since I cannot afford to buy one. I have these 2 thick books recently sent to me by my sweet sister from Philippines.

I read books as well. I was a total bookworm since I was 8. I used to borrow several books from the library and I’m probably the only kid who manages to fill-up the entire library card in a few months. I read, read, and read everyday. So here are some of my books at the moment: Between You and I (something that I picked up for only RM15!), Drink Me (a wine book), and the Wrinkle Cure (by Dr. Nicholas Perricone who has a superb line of beauty products).

2. Take care of your skin.

I’m surprised when people keep saying that they don’t have time to apply beauty products everyday. Taking care of your skin not only serves the purpose of maintaining its health but also a great way to de-stress. Spending a few minutes in front of the mirror just applying toner, serum and moisturizer gives you time to think of yourself and off from those stressful issues.

3. Blog.

I’m not talking about becoming a full-time blogger. If you are someone with a lot of things going on in your mind, having an outlet such as a blog can prove to be fun and relaxing. Try doing it for fun and share your thoughts about the things you enjoy, your experiences and maybe your knowledge. You’ll be surprised at how it can make you feel better and you’ll even meet wonderful people who blog as well and be a part of a social community.

4. Take photos.

You don’t have to be a professional photographer. Just simple ways such as using your phone or normal digital camera will do. Paying attention to moments captured with your camera is a great way to learn how to appreciate time, colors and more. How do you feel when you look at your past photos? Those throw-back Thursday pictures? Don’t they remind you of happier days? That silly hair or silly get-up?

5. Spend quality time with your children.

Or with your nieces, nephews if you don’t have your own child yet. Taking time to color those drawings, learning letters, numbers, painting will give you a sense of happiness that will ease your mind. Those people who spend time with their relatives’ children and take care of them amaze me. You will notice that they tend to be warmer, kind and patient in the working environment. So go ahead and try to spend time with a kid or two. You’ll be surprised at how long your patience can be extended!

6. Play games.

Maybe some of you may find it silly but having a few games on your phone can be helpful as long as you’re not addicted to it and you don’t make your daily life revolve around those farms, candies or whatnot. When you find yourself angry or frustrated at work or anywhere (this does not apply to driving frustration, by the way), take a few minutes during your break to play a game.

7. Exercise.

This is great for health AND de-stressing. I’ve been engaged with a quick daily workout for several weeks now and I found out that it’s liberating! Start with something simple if you haven’t done exercising for quite some time. I downloaded this app called the 7-minute workout and it does wonders. You only need 7 minutes daily, follow the steps and timing from the app and you’re done! Trust me, this can get you sweating within those few minutes. And my tummy has become firmer in just 2 weeks.

And if you are not ready to do daily exercise, try doing something every weekend. Maybe running every Saturday morning or evening? Give it a try. It gives you good time to clear your mind.

8. Accept that life is not fair.

At a young age, I’ve learned that life is simply not fair. The moment you are born, you will have certain sets of privileges or difficulties already laid out for you. You will have certain benefits and challenges that will be different from another person. Or if you are very unlucky, you will be struggling from the moment you were born. This is the way life is. I don’t believe that life will ever be fair. Somewhere, somehow, there are people having a harder or better life than us. Don’t compare or ask why some have so much money or why that person gets a higher pay than you do. Do not expect that your desires will be laid out in front of you to pick. Do not think that just because people have more money means that they don’t have problems. Each person has his own challenges to face and accomplish.

Some people also think that their bosses have an easier life than them and tend to do self-pity, and this leads to stress. For me, I don’t think that bosses have easier lives. In fact, they are carrying a very heavy burden especially if they own the business. Imagine the daily pressure of making the business profitable enough to pay for our salaries? Who gets cursing from the top management or directors when objectives are not achieved? Is it you or your boss? Some employees don’t look at it this way, leading to unhappy work life. We all have our own challenges, whether you are an employee, a business owner, CEO, or a housewife. I’ve accepted that life is not fair which means I have to depend on myself to get the things I want in life. This thought has liberated me at a young age and has since worked hard for the achievement I desire. And it has been really great! What better sense of fulfillment than what you achieved on your own, right? Life is not fair but life can be good!

Absolute Thai – Great Thai cuisine

My son and I would sometimes go with my husband to The Curve and go walking around the entire afternoon until evening. As usual, my son would be looking for a toy to buy which would take hours of walking for me while I push him on his stroller.

Dinner is either buying from restaurants outside The Curve and when I have cravings for something inside this mall, my husband would take us to eat dinner there. One time, I wanted to have some Thai food and he brought us to Absolute Thai at Ikano Power Centre (IPC).

Friends might find it surprising to see me eating spicy food but there was something about Thai tom yum that really got me hooked. I ordered tom yum soup with prawns and my dessert, mango with sticky rice! Must always have this dessert at Thai restaurants! I’m not really the type who likes to order so many varieties so these are enough for me. For my son, we ordered Japanese bean curd and minced chicken soup. No worries, his soup was not spicy at all, we double confirmed.

My Thai tom yum soup…hot and spicy but delicious for me…

My hubby ordered some noodle and fried chicken…

It’s great that their ‘placemat’ is the menu itself so you can quickly see and choose from their menu. Don’t you just hate it when you have to ask and wait for the menu before you can start choosing what to eat?

Absolute Thai restaurant has an outdoor area where people can smoke but it’s also a nice location to have a view of The Curve. At night, the air is breezy and cool, of course, you wouldn’t want to be outside when it’s raining but it’s quite nice on a normal evening.

I had a delicious dinner at Absolute Thai and I will surely come back for my tom yum here!

Lancome Teint Miracle – Weightless Foundation

Liquid foundations have been my best friends to maintain a presentable look when I go out. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t use one ever since I became conscious of my huge pores (that’s around 11 years ago!).

I was using a Japanese brand before but I wanted to try something that feels lighter, something that’s more like a second skin. During my usual trip to Sephora, I decided to grab Lancome Teint Miracle.

What caught my attention was the front of the box that said “Natural Light Creator, Bare Skin Perfection”. If you’ve read my other beauty stuff blogs then I’ll guess you’d know that packaging and labels play an important role in my purchasing decision. It just makes sense to judge a product by what information and effort a brand puts on its labels.

Lancome Teint Miracle: Natural Light Creator, Bare Skin Perfection

Lancome Teint Miracle is oil-free, non-comedogenic and also has SPF 16, might seem low if you’re exposed outdoors several times in a day but I normally apply a moisturizer with higher SPF before my foundation so this is fine. A Sephora beauty advisor assisted me to try the product on my neck and helped me picked the right shade.

The problem with some of the foundations that I’ve used before is the heavy feeling during midday. But this foundation was weightless! It doesn’t feel like  the usual makeup foundation. It feels thin and light on the skin yet it gives good coverage over my pores and some dark spots.

I find the packaging great and easy to use. The pump only needs light effort to use and has very good control on dispensing sufficient amount of the product. I love that it’s in a transparent glass where I can easily see how much is left. The name ‘TEINT MIRACLE’ and the flower logo icon are embossed in silver color which make it look even more impressive and simply pretty in the vanity cabinet.

I’ve been using it for 3 weeks now and I just love the effect on my skin. I even skip my Benefit Porefessional sometimes when I’m rushing and my pores don’t appear huge anymore. I also noticed that when I get back home from work, my face still looks presentable — even tone, no redness, no huge pores visible, even with just one-time retouching with face powder throughout the day.

Liquid foundation designed for Asian skins

How to apply with fingers: Shake well before use. Pump a small pea size of the product, either to your hand or palm, whichever suits you but I normally pump to my hand. Dab dots on several areas of your face: nose, cheeks forehead, chin, temples, around the borders of your face. Using your third and fourth fingers, gently spread from your nose area then going outwards to your cheeks, chin and forehead. Let it set for a few minutes before you apply other creams or powders on top of it. Give it maybe 3 to 5 minutes.

Of course, this is my own technique. Some might choose to apply using other ways like maybe using a foundation brush or the entire palm instead of fingers. Feel free to use the technique you feel most comfortable with.

Chitosan Plus for Weight Loss

There was a craze about this certain supplement called Garcinia Cambogia which started as early as last year. This was probably driven by Dr. Oz show wherein he shared amazing facts about Garcinia Cambogia which makes you burn fat quicker and more efficiently. You can lose weight or burn fat without exercise and without changing your diet! Who wouldn’t want an easy fix like this, right?

Image from web

The Garcinia Cambogia extract is from a fruit native to Indonesia but has now spread across Southeast Asia, South Africa and India. This extract contains HCA or hydroxycitric acid which blocks fats and sugar PLUS it also suppresses appetite. Seems to good to be true? Unbelievable? Well, scientists have done research and tests on this (you can check out some videos from Dr. Oz show to understand more).

The great thing is that this extract has dual action on our body:

1) it blocks fat and sugar = FAT BUSTER

2) it helps to control cravings, emotional or stress eating = APPETITE SUPPRESSANT

Like some people who also experience or suffer from cravings, I also tend to eat unhealthy food, specially during my monthly period. I crave for sweet food, mainly chocolates, doughnuts and cakes. I sometimes even have the urge to drink carbonated beverages which result to my fat belly. Since early this year, after changing to marketing management for a non-retail brand where I rarely need to go malling, I had a massive weight gain of 5 kilos within 3 months!

I was convinced to try the supplement. However, I’m very cautious of weight-loss supplements as I’ve seen a lot of different brands before and I somehow doubt whether it’s safe or not. I did some research online and I found that GNC has Garcinia Cambogia supplements. Bad news is, when I checked the store, this particular supplement is already out-of-stock and you need to pre-order. Well, this is also a good sign that a lot of people are taking it and more probable that it’s effective.

Good thing that the GNC staff was clever to recommend an alternative. There was a variant with added nutrients to make weight loss even more effective with gardenia cambogia called Chitosan Plus. It also contained L-Carnitine, an amino acid that helps the body convert fat to energy.

So, yes, I decided to try the Chitosan Plus. It comes in a bottle of 120 tablets in white bottle with blue sticker and, of course, the GNC logo. One bottle will last 30 days since you will need to take 4 tablets a day. It costs RM196.90 but you can get 20% off as a GNC member.

GNC Chitosan Plus 120 tablets

Directions for use:

As a dietary supplement, take 2 tablets 30 minutes before lunch and 2 tablets 30 minutes before dinner daily with each meal. Consume with 8 ounces of water.

Here’s the Supplement Facts at the back of the bottle:

GNC Chitosan Plus Supplement Facts

No Sugar, No Starch,  No Artificial Colors, No Artificial Flavors, No Preservatives, No Wheat, No Dairy.

The bottle is secured with seal after removing the cap.

The tablets are in cream color. Downside is it’s not easy to swallow so you really need to consume with lots of water. My tip to those who are challenged with this size, take 1 tablet at a time, give a few seconds of interval before you take the next tablet.

GNC Chitosan Plus tablets

I’ve been taking Chitosan Plus now for the past 2 months and I’m amazed with the results on my eating habits. I don’t crave anymore and rarely eat supper, unless my husband brings back food late at night. And when I do eat supper, I can only eat a little. Not that I put effort into not eating more but I just feel naturally satisfied with what I’ve eaten sufficiently. I don’t overeat like before and even during my monthly period, my appetite is still like normal with no intense craving for sweets!

Within 2 months of just taking this supplement, I managed to lose 1 kilogram which is a big achievement for me. Few months before I started taking Chitosan Plus, I actually tried doing daily morning exercise (running on machine) and counting calories to control my food intake. It was alright, I lost 0.4kg within 2 months but counting calories and controlling my appetite  don’t work quite well. It’s really difficult to fight emotional appetite and cravings.

But taking Chitosan Plus which contains Garcinia Cambogia has been great. I don’t need to fight off cravings, I feel normal. This doesn’t mean I’m eating irresponsibly, I still make an effort to eat proper food, less junk. Instead of indulging on chocolates, I’ve been taking dried fruits. I still take KitKat and others occasionally but that’s probably only once or twice a week.

This month, I have started adding exercise to my weight loss program. I do daily quick exercise and weekend running or cycling. I feel great!

My progress might seem a bit slow for some people but I’ve learned how to count my achievements, even small ones. So I take small steps at a time and I don’t expect miracles within a short time. I’ve nursed my extra weight for 3 years now and it won’t come off in a month or 2, would it?
