Expand your kids’ knowledge and unleash their imagination at Dinoscovery

Have you ever told your children about dinosaurs? Have they seen these prehistoric creatures on TV, on National Geographic, Animal Planet or Discovery Channel? Whatever your answer is, bringing them to Dinoscovery will be a wonderful experience to relive the time when dinosaurs ruled the earth.
Located at the 4th level of Avenue K in Jalan Ampang, just walking distance from Suria KLCC, Dinoscovery is a unique and engaging world class exhibit spanning 13,000 sqft, specially created to propel adults and children back in time to the Mesozoic Era for an unforgettable prehistoric adventure.

Last April, popular Australian children’s musical group, Hi-5 launched Dinoscovery by Dinosaurs Live!, Asia Pacific’s first, one-of-its-kind interactive, edutainment exhibition amidst colourful confetti and a cheering audience which included 40 kids from a children’s enrichment centre, The Curious Academy at Discoveria, Avenue K.

The all-Australian cast from the hit television programme created much excitement in a special appearance and interacted closely with the children in the build-up to the unveiling of the Dinoscovery mascot. There were audible “ohhhs” and”ahhs” when a life-sized dinosaur accompanied by two “paleontologists” decked in tan-coloured Dinoscovery vests, Bermudas, safari hats and matching trail boots emerged from the imposing entrance of the exhibition.
So I decided to bring my 4-year-old son to Dinoscovery one Sunday morning. He has been curious about these creatures and was, in fact, fascinated by them when he saw Jurassic Park on TV (raaaarrrrr!).

dinoscovery_dinosaurs_alive_avenue_k_entrance
The entrance to the exhibit is a perfectly themed wooden gate. Upon entry, guests are welcomed by a map showing the dinosaurs to see inside.

dinoscovery_dinosaurs_alive_avenue_k_map
(Note that not all of these dinosaurs are available inside)
First thing to do is to wear the explorer’s vest and take the paper map where explorers need to place stickers on the right spot on the map based on the journey inside (you have to experience it for yourself, I won’t spoil the fun by sharing the mystery, hehe).
Inside, you will see an amazing display of life-like dinosaurs completely provided with scientific information for our kids to learn. By the way, the display is not just the typical, hard, stationary statues; these dinosaurs are life-like to the touch and they move. Pretty amazing and even accompanied by sound effects.

Amongst Dinoscovery’s star attractions include the Dino Quest, an RFID-based scavenger hunt for dinosaur specimens which enables visitors to redeem a Junior or Expert Paleontologist certificate at the end of the tour; the Dinoshooting Range where visitors partake in a mission to save sleeping Diplodocuses from pesky mosquitoes with paintball rifles; and Race A Theropod where visitors challenge the swift-footed Gallimimus in a 10-metre interactive race. Other attractions include posing for pictures with dinosaurs in 3 different settings, climbing a wall to glimpse a Pteranodon’s eggs and excavating for fossils in a sand pit. We also watched a 3D documentary movie about dinosaurs where my son discovered how heavy floods long time ago killed a lot of dinosaurs.
dinoscovery_dinosaurs_alive_avenue_k_exhibition_kl
Children can even ride a dinosaur! (My son didn’t do this, he’s too small and scared, haha!)

After completing the scavenger hunt and placing the stickers on the map, my son submitted his map and claimed his Junior Paleontologist certificate. Wee!

dinoscovery_dinosaurs_alive_avenue_k_exhibition_kl
My son is now a Junior Paleontologist!

There is also an area where children can color sketches of dinosaurs and see different types of dinos from A to Z.

Discoveria Cafeteria
The journey inside Dinoscovery might get you and your kids thirsty or hungry but no need to worry. Discoveria Cafeteria is right at the exit!
My son had a wonderful time at Dinoscovery. It was a good learning experience to know more about prehistoric creatures and be able to relive this part of our world’s history. I believe that we as parents must strengthen, ignite and encourage our children’s quest for knowledge. We must show them that learning is fun and can be an exciting way to spend time with the family.

Transformers 4 Age of Extinction at Mid Valley Megamall

The movie will soon be rocking the cinemas…but in the meantime, we have awesome Autobots at Mid Valley Megamall

Just sharing some wonderful news, if you haven’t noticed it yet. Mid Valley Megamall, Hong Leong Bank and Nokia have brought a majestic display of some of the autobots right here in Kuala Lumpur in celebration of the upcoming launch of Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. When I saw friends post about it a few days ago, I knew I just have to bring my son to see it!

transformers_4_age_of_extinction_autobots_display_bumblebee

Well, he was used to seeing Optimus Prime and Bumblebee only on TV but now he gets to see them in mega-size! You can imagine his excitement when I told him I was bringing him to see the giant robots. This afternoon, I brought him to MidValley and he had a blast seeing gigantic models of his favorite autobots!

I am definitely excited to see the movie soon. But my son is not ready to go to the cinema so it’s a choice between watching it without him or wait for the DVD to come out. I’ve been collecting original DVDs of Transformers so it’s fine with me. I just don’t get to see it while everybody else does. But with Mark Wahlberg in it, I’m not sure if I can wait that long!

So while waiting for the movie launch and if you’re a big fan of Transformers, it will be worth your while to visit the display at Mid Valley Megamall while the autobots are there! Just be patient with the crowd specially on a weekend as the area gets really crowded. It will be worth the wait and patience to have your #selfies with these robot displays.

The Transformers 4: Age of Extinction display is located at Mid Valley Megamall, Ground Floor, East Atrium, right in front of Uniqlo. Movie is launching on 27th June 2014, watch out for schedule in Malaysia at Golden Screen Cinemas soon!

This is believed to be the first time that a Malaysian antibacterial personal care range has become the official sponsor of a major Hollywood superhero franchise.

“While Spider-Man is committed to fight crime, Antabax is committed to fight germs and to protect and care for users. Spider-Man and Antabax are both young yet have appeal and impact for the greater good. It is a great partnership as it works on many levels. Response from the public has confirmed that this is a sponsorship that works for us,” Mr Ng said.

The brand which was introduced in 2004 is now among the leading antibacterial personal care ranges in Malaysia, and is known for constantly innovating in terms of products and marketing.

“This is our first sponsorship of an international movie, and Antabax has more exciting activities planned to keep up with our users’ active lifestyles,” said Mr Ng.

More than 300 guests attended a special advanced screening of The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Rise of Electro at TGV 1 Utama, including Antabax’s business partners, staff, contest winners and media.

The tie-up with Antabax was a first for Sony Pictures as well. “Sony Pictures is thrilled to work with Antabax, the official sponsor and partner for the highly-anticipated iconic series, The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro, which will hit Malaysian cinemas on May 1, 2014. Networks Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Product giveaways, Spidey movie marathons, mascot appearances at malls and special product promotions have created major buzz around Antabax.

The lucky winner who will get to live like Spider-Man in New York for five nights at the filming location of the Amazing Spider-Man 2 is Mr Wong Chee Wing, a 34-year old property agent, who will be skilled at a top secret training academy to master Spidey’s super skills. He will work with elite trainers to learn a blend of Parkour, Capoeira, acrobatics and stunt work. Once trained, he will have the opportunity to head to the streets of New York to demonstrate his Amazing Spider-Man skills in Times Square. And yes, there will be a video of his adventures.

Give your Kids the Gift of Play at Bricks4Kidz

Bricks4Kidz Shares the Importance of Play for Children’s Development and Growth

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-kids-play
Did you know that ‘play’ is very important in the development of our children, especially during their early years? When I became a mother, I made a promise to myself that I should always find time to play and engage with my son. As a full-time employee during the day, I found this quite a challenge while I was managing beauty brands a few years back.
But I discovered that some small efforts can go a long way for our children. One technique is to set aside play time for our kids EVERY DAY. It can be as quick as 30 minutes as long as we fulfill that time with our child and we focus on nothing else but “play”.

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-kids-play

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-director
Owner and Managing Director of Bricks4Kidz Kota Damansara, Ms. Lisa Ong
Bricks4Kidz in Sunway Giza, headed by Ms. Lisa Ong, truly recognizes the importance of allowing our kids to spend time to play and be creative. The learning center held a parenting seminar where developmental psychologist, Ms. Elaine Yong, shared valuable insights in helping our children’s optimal development.

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-guest-speaker
Ms. Yong shared and emphasized that ‘play’ is not wasting time but it enhances both physical and mental activity for our children. Play allows children to learn about their environment because of its interactive nature that allows them to construct knowledge.

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-kids-play

To me, ‘playing’ gives kids a chance to learn about their surroundings and other things in a natural, fun way that make them learn faster. Observing my son closely every day, I know that playing has been an integral part of his growth. He enjoys painting, playing with cars, playing board games, and, of course, building blocks. He has learned how to analyze shapes and has acquired the skills to build something from his own imagination. And another remarkable thing is he knows how to spend his time playing alone, which to me is a good display of independence for children. I believe that in as much as it’s important for us to spend time with them, it is equally important to allow kids to have their ‘me’ time.

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-kids-play

Speaking of ‘me’ time for our kids, now that school holidays are approaching, it would be good to send our kids to Bricks4Kidz Holiday Camp.
image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-kids-play

In the Holiday Camp, children will experience the following:
  • LEGO model building
  • Lots of unique, free-play bricks for creative model building
  • Games and challenges
  • Arts and crafts

image-bricks-4-kidz-kota-damansara-malaysia-kids-play

My son enjoys visiting Bricks4Kidz. I guess he’s just thrilled by a place full of LEGO blocks. He becomes very imaginative in this center, making use of the blocks to build something that he can think of. The staff are very friendly and I’m surprised that my son gets along with them. Well, normally, he’s a snob and wouldn’t want to play with strangers. (See my son’s first experience at Bricks4Kidz, click HERE)

Let’s make this world a better place for our kids by giving them the gift of play, spending time with them and giving them a chance to grow positively, creatively and happily.

Make Up For Ever HD Make Up Workshop

The mummy blogger continues to explore brands that she hasn’t tried before
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
When fellow beauty addict Ashley Yeen announced that she collaborated with Make Up For Ever to conduct a workshop on high definition make up, I knew I had to join. I’ve certainly encountered MUFE long time ago but I haven’t tried any of the products. I guess I just didn’t have the chance or the time to really explore it before.
So it was good news when Ashley invited me to this workshop with MUFE! The agenda: High Definition Make Up. Wait, by the way, what is high-definition makeup? You guessed it right; HD makeup has something to do with video and photography. I’m sure you’ve encountered the term ‘HDTV’ or high-definition television. This type basically project images that are several times better in resolution than normal or standard types of TV. Same for photography, we have high-resolution images captured by DSLR and even point-and-shoot cameras.
And what do all these have to do with makeup? Simple. When these latest technology video cams or cameras capture your face, your makeup should be in ‘high-definition’ technique, especially if you want to hide some flaws. Professional make-up artists have undergone intensive training to perfect this high-definition technique but they also use good makeup products and tools to achieve that HD look. When the makeup technique is not HD-ready, a person’s face may reveal imperfections on video or on photos, which, of course, is something we ladies don’t like. Moreover, some make-up products or techniques make the face look overly done, unnatural and even older.
But HD makeup is not just for videos and photos. It is a great makeup technique for daily wear, especially if you have to face a lot of people. Having an HD-ready face is close-up ready, meaning your face will look great and flawless when people see you face-to-face. HD makeup effectively conceals imperfections without the look of thick application. Like what I said on Ashley’s post, HD means “Head-turning Diva”, and it was such a delight to attend a short workshop to learn how to achieve this look with Make Up For Ever.

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
Arriving a few minutes before the starting time, I had sufficient shooting time to explore Make Up For Ever’s store in Sephora Starhill. The façade is a welcoming display of cosmetics beautifully displayed on predominantly black walls and fixtures. The focus collection was HD high-definition makeup such as HD primer, HR elixir, HD foundation, HD cream blusher and HD concealer.
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
The class started with a short introduction and thank you remarks from Ashley. Our workshop make-up artist for the day was Angeline while the workshop model was a lovely gal named Izza. Here, Angeline started removing Izza’s make-up so we can see the full effect of HD make-up before and after application.

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
As this was a workshop, we were taught how to do it on ourselves. Here are some of the MUFE products that we used that day:

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

Make Up For Ever collection including HD products

I really loved that Mist and Fix because it makes your makeup look even better by adding some glow or radiance while making it last longer. For someone like me who only applies full make-up in the morning and needs it to last the whole day at work, Mist and Fix is a great make-up companion. I recommend this as a must-have item in your cosmetic kit. It is priced RM110 for 125ml.
Here are my fellow guests applying make-up on themselves:
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
We started by removing our own make-up (I used So Divine Cleansing Cream) then applied the HD primer blended with HD elixir, followed by the HD foundation. We also applied the HD concealer under the eyes. All these products blended smoothly and evenly on the skin. The textures were great, which allowed easy application on the face.

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
Here’s JL Buzzbee, whom I finally met in person that day, being assisted by pretty make-up artist of MUFE, Shiory.
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

Angeline also recommended using the HD high-definition concealer under the eyes to conceal fine lines and other imperfections prior to eye make-up.
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
The effect of the first few products was very flattering on Izza’s face. She’s lovely to begin with, by the way, but the effect of HD primer + HD elixir + HD foundation + HD concealer made her face look flawless. Compare the right to the left side and you can tell how HD make-up made a wonderful transformation in concealing imperfections without the look of overly done make-up.

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

The workshop continued with application of eye make-up, HD foundation powder, lip color and other make-up items. See all of us with HD-ready faces and smiles here, together with Shiory and Angeline of MUFE. Can you spot Izza in her full HD make-up look?

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

Can you spot where’s Izza with her new HD makeup look?

Oh, yeah, there she is, even lovelier than when we started the workshop…
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

While the other gals continued with their HD make-up sessions, I continued to explore the store and their products. MUFE has really nice make-up collections. Oh, please, don’t tempt me to overspend this month!
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

I loved the makeover tables at MUFE. Each table has a face drawing like this, showing a list of products used and by which make-up artist. Isn’t that cute and also helpful?

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

It’s a paradise of lipsticks and brushes!

image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics

Make-up, make-up, make-up…
image-makeup-forever-beauty-and-cosmetics
I had a great time learning some tips and tricks for achieving a high-definition make-up look. Thanks to MUFE and to Ashley for organizing this session.

Malaysia’s Biggest Kids Expo from Smart Kids Returns

More Enrichment, More Edutainment Choices & More Edu-FUN for both Parents & Children!

image-smart-kids-asia-educational-fair

Smart Kids, the largest and longest-running kids’ education fair in Asia, is set to thrill parents and children alike for the 12th year running this April at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur. The three-day fair brings together a myriad of edutainment (education and entertainment) products and services under one roof, providing an invaluable platform for parents and their children to look for learning centres, childcare education centres, childcare products, edutainment materials and more.

Boasting an impressive line-up of around 100 exhibitors for this year’s fair, the much-awaited parent-child exhibition promises to be a great destination for a beneficial and fun weekend outing for both parents and children.

“Education will always be the focus of parents who are willing to spend on products and services which will help their child’s development and growth. Smart Kids’ mission is to promote a platform with learning tools that will facilitate the physical, emotional, social and intellectual growth of children,” said Mr. Gerald Lum, General Manager of Sphere Exhibits (M) Sdn Bhd.

Smart Kids is organised by Sphere Exhibits, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH); and is co-organised by Mutiara Sigma (M) Sdn Bhd.

The Smart Kids Educational Kids’ Fair is the most successful fair of its kind and continues to garner extensive support from the Malaysian Ministry of Education, learning centre owners and edutainment providers, and parents and children. Last year’s visitor number was estimated to be around 100,000 over the three-day event, with an impressive 96% of visitors expressing that they were able to find what they were looking for, and 98% of visitors stating that they would want to visit the fair again in 2014.

Previous years’ visitors agreed that the fair is an excellent and engaging platform for both children and parents alike.
image-smart-kids-educational-fair

The kindergarten students had a great time and enjoy being part of the engaging Smart Kids Educational Kids’ fair

“The idea of bringing together so many child-oriented brands and services under one roof was convenient for us to find out more information at the same time,” said Mr. Cheah. He visited the 2011 edition of Smart Kids together with his two children and wife.“It was definitely very interesting and informative, and not to mention very educational for the kids as well! My 5 year old son particularly enjoyed the talent show as he loved how engaging the program was. My 8 year old daughter is already asking me to bring her back next year!”
Mrs Chuo, who visited the fair twice in the 2011 edition of Smart Kids, felt that the fair was a very successful and meaningful for both children and parents as there are so many things to see and engage with! “The most important thing is that both of my children got hands-on exposure when they took part in the various games and contests,” she explained.

“Smart Kids caters to parents and children of different age levels. Children nowadays not only need to study smart, but also play smart! This is an excellent opportunity for them to explore and learn new things, while being able to enjoy themselves and have fun with their parents at the same time,” Lum added.

So what can both parent and kids expect in this year’s edition of Smart Kids? “It is definitely bigger, better and even more exciting than the previous years, filled with educational and fun activities!” said Lum.

The Smart Kids 2014 exhibition is divided into 6 categories –
  • Education enrolment pool
  • Educational products
  • Edu-finance solutions
  • Nutritional food and beverage
  • Leisure, sports and recreation, and
  • Children’s educational ICT solutions

With a wide range of interactive and fun activities, it is the only parent-child exhibition that ensures a rewarding experience for parents and a great time for kids.

Ayam Brand launches All Happy Families Campaign
Ayam Brand™ goes around the world to get various real families to share how Ayam Brand™ is part of their family traditions. A series of video interviews of these families are available on the Ayam Brand™ website and Facebook fan-pages.
The campaign shows happy local families with their own history and culinary traditions, in front of iconic locations, like the Kuala Lumpur Skyline, the Sydney Opera House, The Hong Kong Peak and the Singapore Marina Barrage.
Internationally renowned, award-winning Malaysian photographer Stefen Chow, a winner of the World Press Award 2013, shot the campaign. He leads the creative direction of the three-year project, travelling around the world to seek, document and photograph families willing to share their story and culinary traditions.
The campaign will run from 2014 to 2016 in three series, one per year with on-the-ground activities as well as print and online exposure in regions where Ayam Brand™ is active. To take the story of Ayam Brand™ global, the campaign was extended in the form of advertisements on the inflight magazines of major world airlines like Qantas, Singapore Airlines, China Southern, SilkAir and Malaysia’s very own AirAsia
According to Ayam Brand Group Marketing Director, Mr Herve Simon, Ayam Brand’s uniqueness lies in its commitment to quality, staying true to its brand heritage and the adaptation of its products to local and regional needs, as well as introducing new variants and products in sync with changing lifestyles and tastes, while carefully extending its reach to a wider audience.
“In Asia, Ayam Brand™ is very much a part of the culinary repertoire of families. The families featured in this campaign are not paid talents but real-life Ayam Brand™ users. The experiences and recipes that they share are truly their own, in keeping with Ayam Brand’s commitment to not adding flavoring, added MSG or preservatives,” said Mr Simon.

The products featured in the Malaysian advertisement are Sardines in Tomato Sauce, Chili Tuna, Baked Beans and Coconut Milk, which are all traditional favorites.
The recipes shared by the families are also representative of the culinary habits of their countries, like En Muhamad Faiz Azizan’s family offering the Malaysian picnic and teatime classic, sardine sandwiches.
“While Ayam Brand™ products are available globally through Asian specialty stores there are still huge opportunities for growth that we are in the process of developing. We are expanding carefully to be true to our brand identity and values. For example our focus is on freshly canned produce, without preservatives or added MSG with the assurance of it being Halal for our Muslim consumers,” said Ms Marie-Magali Falcoz , Ayam Brand Marketing Manager Malaysia said.
“Our aim is to bring the great taste and proven quality of Ayam Brand™ to a wider global audience by showcasing how our brand is a part of the lives of the culinary traditions of the Asian region. The best way to do that is through real people, real families who can attest to the goodness of our product over generations,” Mr Simon said in closing.

Join Friso “Our Today Moments” Contest to Win RM10,000 worth of Special Experience

At this time and age, motherhood continues to be challenging with more and more demands to balance time between career, family, marriage and parenting. Like a lot of mothers, I also face the tough task of creating sufficient quality time to spend with my son. For a long time, my work has been eating up my time, and I have been very guilty of allowing other priorities to take over my life as a mother.

Have you been so busy with work, business or other pressing matters that you barely spend happy moments with your kid/s? When was the last time you gave your children a long, tight hug? How often do you tell them that you love them? Do you laugh together at anything and when was the last time you made them laugh or giggle? Have you done any fun activity with your child last month, last week, yesterday or today?

friso-gold-today-moments-mother-and-child

When I participated in Friso Gold’s Mum Survey, I realized that I have the power to make a better childhood for my son by creating Today Moments. Friso Gold’s Today Moments refers to the time we spend with our children, the time we set aside our daily to-dos and focus on “today”.  In other words, it’s about us mothers making the effort to make every moment count with our kids. (read more about my discoveries from Friso Gold Mum Survey and Today Moments – click HERE)

Now, you also have the chance to discover and realize your own Today Moments with Friso Gold. Its “Our Today Moments” contest aims to remind us, Malaysian mothers, to put our daily tasks aside and live moments with our children. Friso Gold will help us achieve our wish list on the things we want to do with our children — big or small, tough or easy. It can be something as simple as enjoying a full day of fun at a kid’s theme park or a swimming day. Name it and Friso Gold will help the winners achieve those wishes!

Friso Gold will help you achieve your wishes!

So how can you join the exciting Friso Gold “Our Today Moments” contest? It’s quite easy with these 5 steps:

Step 1 – Purchase any participating Friso Gold product – Frisomum Gold, Friso Gold 3 or Friso Gold 4 (any size)

Step 2 – Tell Friso Gold one special experience (big or small) that you have always wanted to do together with your child but have not been able to and why.

Step 3 – Complete your personal particulars: Name as per IC, IC number, contact number, mailing address, email, your child’s name and age

Step 4 – Attach proof of purchase (original Friso Gold scoop from any participating product) to contest form.

Step 5 – Mail to PO Box:
Friso Gold “Our Today Moments” Contest, P.O.Box 3202, 47507 Subang Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan.
And that’s it! You and your child are on your way to winning great prizes from Friso Gold!
There are 2 ways to get the contest form:
You may download the contest form from Friso Gold website: http://friso.com.my/activities/our_today_moments/
You can get the sticker form on pack at major supermarkets and retailer outlets near you.

And the exciting part, what prizes await you?

That’s RM1,000,000 worth of prizesto be given away to the lucky Malaysian mums!

Contest runs from 13thJanuary until 28th February 2014.

If given an opportunity, I would want to spend a whole day with my son (and my husband) at Legoland without queueing for hours. It’s coincidental that this is the Early Bird Prize but my son adores Lego very much and we’ve been trying a few times to get in. We just can’t go through the long wait as my son can get really impatient. I would love to bring him around Legoland, take photos of him with those cute bricks and Lego displays. I’m sure he’ll have a fun time and so will I! I do hope that Friso Gold can help me achieve this wish for me and my son!
So to all mothers who have that special wish to do something really fun and memorable with their child, this is your chance! Friso Gold will be granting wishes to 100 winners with RM10,000 worth each of that special experience!

Bricks4Kidz – A Great Place for Creative Learning and Fun for Kids!

bricks4kidz-learning-program-with-lego

I’ve adored Lego since I was a young girl. I can still recall making robots, houses and human figures using those colorful plastic mini bricks. Somehow, those simple small things can bring so much fun and joy to a child. Looking at the world that our children live in today, it seems that the happiness of kids have become so high-technology (and more costly, by the way). They now have iPads, XBox, Play station, internet games and other mobile devices. Classic games that I enjoy during my time has been lost: hide and seek, snakes and ladders board game, scrabble using the classic letter tiles playing against friends who are in front of you and not strangers sitting somewhere around the world in front of their laptop or tablet. Technology has been great and we’ll definitely die without those things that we have now; but sometimes I can’t help but wonder if our children are missing out on things that we enjoyed during our childhood?
My 4-year-old son, like a lot of kids nowadays, is also exposed to iPad games but I add a lot of educational apps to ensure that his iPad is mainly for learning and not playing. I don’t let him play for long hours and I make sure that we do something ‘traditional’ every day. We draw, we wrestle, we paint, we play toys, and we read books. A few months ago, during one of his shopping sprees with the grandparents, he bought sets of Legos and I was happily surprised to see his deep interest in fixing those bricks. It’s a delight to discover your child’s creative interest!
Some people are surprised when they find out that, although I specialize in marketing management, my educational background is actually Interior Design. Yep, I was a licensed interior designer. And, yes, I have an eternal love and passion for creative things. You can just imagine how happy I was to bring my son to this amazing place in Kota Damansara — Bricks4Kidz!

bricks4kidz-learning-program-with-lego

Reaching Malaysian shores for the first time with its inaugural opening in Sri Petaling in September, the Bricks4Kidz (B4K) enrichment centre provides one-of-a-kind, essential enrichment educational programmes to children from ages of four until twelve. Centred on innovative project kits and theme-based models that effectively combine education with play, children can ‘learn, build and play’, as the tagline goes, with LEGO® Bricks. B4K programmes have been lauded for their success in 16 countries worldwide and over 300 locations in the United States of America (US).
Isn’t it amazing that there’s actually a learning program to help our kids with their brain development through Lego bricks? Bricks4Kidz has different programs for each age group up to 8 years old. The program is aimed at enhancing their thinking skills such as coordination, analysis and creative thinking. As the managing director of Creative Child Development Sdn Bhd and Master Licensee of B4K, Mr. Demitrius Lam said, “It’s like teaching a child how to walk before he can run. Creative thinking through Lego-building trains them to figure out things or solve problems and not give up, the way that we should be in real life when we grow up and face bigger challenges in life.”

Mr Demitrius Lam, managing director of Creative Child Development Sdn Bhd
I don’t need much convincing. I started playing Lego bricks at a young age. Although I won’t attribute my creative skills entirely to that, I do believe that it helps in training the mind for bigger things, as we get old. When you’re playing with Lego bricks, you learn to think that there’s always a way to go around building something you want to create. You learn to imagine more and visualize things beyond the norm.
My son was the first to arrive at Bricks4Kidz that Saturday morning where other mommy bloggers from the Butterfly Project and I were invited to an exclusive introduction session. Very much familiar and in love with LEGO®, he started playing around with the bricks, wanting to build a car, as usual. Mr Demitrius Lam was very kind to play with my son and patient enough to attend to his requests.

Aden’s class started with an educational lesson from Cik Siti about an octopus. For a simple exercise of building an octopus figure, I find it incredible that Bricks4Kidz provides an interactive lesson to make kids learn more about what they’re about to make. Cik Siti explained what an octopus is and gave interesting facts about this animal before diving into building the figure. I’ve never seen my son so attentive like this!

They provided a step-by-step guide, printed huge in full color, which is easy for the kids to follow. Aden patiently followed every step. Watching him closely through this class, I was very happy to see his eagerness and patience to achieve the mission.

After the octopus exercise, Cik Siti gave the kids a quick exercise to build blocks and to color. Aden also enjoyed this part and happily colored his paper and even wrote his name.

For older kids, Ms Lisa Ong, managing director and owner of B4K in Kota Damansara, conducted an interesting exercise that involved a more advanced level of constructing brick figures.

There are several rooms for different age group classes. Notice that each room is colorfully painted and tables are in creative shapes that also come in different colors. Visually stimulating and fun for the children.

And check out this signage. This has got to be the cutest ‘Toilet’ signage I’ve seen! Well done, B4K!

Me and my fellow mummies spent a bit more time talking to Mr Demitrius Lam about the learning program. “In all of our 130 subject lessons based on  (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics, B4K adopts a hands-on method where our students are coached by qualified teachers who guide them through new projects and challenges each week. For example, to teach children about the Laws of Motion, we have designed six project kits over the course of six weeks that will teach them about the essential principles discovered by Sir Isaac Newton such as inertia and mass. It sounds extremely complicated, especially for kids as young as four to eight years of age. However, by using simple words and encouraging them to build a clock or a see-saw using LEGO® Bricks, they will be able to understand the concepts better and will ultimately develop a positive attitude towards science,” explained Mr. Lam. “Having LEGO® Bricks as our main teaching tool will not only make the classes more interesting and fun; it will also help develop the children in other ways. This include fostering sequential problem solving skills, advancing spatial and relational thinking, enhance EQ, foster teamwork as well as social and emotional skills, and nurturing process-oriented thinking,” Mr Lam added.
What are the educational and developmental benefits of going through the Bricks4Kidz Program?
  • Following step-by-step directions
  • Sequencing
  • Fine motor skills
  • Spatial/ relational thinking
  • Visual/ Kinesthetic learning
  • Organizational skills
  • Process-oriented thinking
  • Social/emotional skills
  • Self-esteem
  • Teamwork and cooperation

Aden was very happy after finishing one lesson at Bricks4Kidz. At home, he excitedly opened his new Lego set from B4K and we started building the figures. He really enjoys this and I’m so happy to do something fun with him! Well, yeah, I already admitted that I’m a Lego fan, too, right?
bricks4kidz-learning-program-with-lego-bricks
Aden’s Lego village
I think that Bricks4Kidz learning program is an amazing, genius way to develop our children’s minds and attitude as well. This is a unique and fun way for our children to cultivate sets of skills that are not necessarily developed in basic school subjects. In Aden’s first class, I’ve observed his full attentiveness and patience in following the lesson, which is quite rare for me to see. And even at home, he was more jolly and obedient after the class. Amazing!

Benefit Beauty Bash with Butterfly Project

Happy New Year! It’s the beginning of 2014 and I had to keep reminding myself to write ‘4’ instead of ‘3’ on dates. Lucky I use an erasable pen.
I wouldn’t let this month pass by without sharing a post about one of the most fun beauty event I’ve attended as a butterfly with the Butterfly Project. Last month, me and other gorgeous butterflies had a chance to discover tips and tricks for applying make-up in a few minutes. Benefit Cosmetics Malaysia at Starhill (that’s on a floor above Sephora Starhill) held a gathering for beauty bloggers who are simply in love with Benefit.

I haven’t tried a lot of Benefit products yet but I personally love POREfessional. It’s a great quick fix for my huge pores! (Check my review on POREfessional, click HERE)

Benefit POREfessional, my hero product!

The Benefit Beauty Bash was such a wonderful start for a great Saturday morning. Sweet, pink balloons adorned the shop, which gave an immediate feel of something wonderful for the day. I was the first blogger to arrive so I didn’t waste time by taking photos of the pretty set-up.

One by one, fellow gorgeous bloggers arrived. It was great seeing and meeting all or most of them. A few of the girls I finally met in person were Shivani Balraj, Sabby Prue (Sabrina Azmi), Innanie Ariffin, Wiida Ribbon, Ayna Jalal and more (so sorry if I missed the name of some). Everyone was wonderful and I really enjoy attending events with the Butterfly Project because everyone is simply friendly and approachable. Kudos to our good friend, leader and mother, Ms. Tammy Lim.

The event started with an introduction from James of Benefit Cosmetics Malaysia. He gave a very good tutorial on how to complete a make-up look in a few minutes; I’d say around 15.

Pretty Sabby Prue was the make-up model for the day. James did a really good job in transforming her eye into an even more captivating one. Sabby already has a naturally beautiful pair of eyes but with James’s makeup technique (here seen on one eye first), Sabby’s eyes became more gorgeous and perfect for going out or for an event.

After the tutorial from James, we were challenged to do our own make-up look using any of the Benefit products displayed in the boutique. It was fun looking around and trying different products! The activity was also a contest wherein we need to post our before and after shots to Instagram with tag to Benefit Cosmetics.

There are so many interesting products but I didn’t have much time. One of the most useful and practical products I noticed was the set collection. Each set contains several items that are perfect companions for make-up. And the sets come with a tips and tricks booklet attached to the box cover. Cool and genius!
