Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System

Some of us might not have the budget for a Clarisonic…but, hey, what about this one?

skincare-facial-cleansing-device-anti-aging-set
For the past years, I’m sure you have witnessed the popularity of facial cleansing devices, dominated by best-selling brand Clarisonic. It took a while before beauty brands recognized the strong potential from this new beauty segment but it wasn’t too late for brands like Clinique and Olay to jump in the beauty device wagon.
While I think that Clarisonic is a worthy investment for good facial cleansing system, not everyone would have a budget of RM600+ to enjoy the benefits of a cleansing device. I wasn’t highly keen on trying out a cleansing device before but while shopping online at www.watsons.com.my, I received a free Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System (worth around RM129) together with my purchase of RM150 of selected brands. I love online shopping and I love free stuff!

skincare-facial-cleansing-device-anti-aging-set

This facial cleansing device set comes in Olay’s black and red box. The box set contains: 1 facial cleansing device, 1 brush head, 1 skin renewal cleanser 20ml and 2 AA batteries.
Benefits of Olay Regenerist Cleansing System:
  • Up to 4x better cleansing than cleanser alone (tested on removing makeup vs. cleanser alone)
  • Gently exfoliates
  • Delivers daily deep cleansing
  • Renewal Cleanser primes the skin for anti-aging regimen
  • Device has 2-speed control, is water-resistant and easy to hold

What results to expect:
  • Skin is instantly cleaner, feels fresher
  • Skin texture is improved and smoother with continuous use

skincare-facial-cleansing-device-anti-aging-set
I like that Duracell batteries are already included in this boxed set. Don’t you just hate it when you discover that you need batteries for something you just bought or received? It’s also easy to install the 2 batteries on the device. Gently rock the battery compartment (on the base) side to side while pulling to release battery cover. Then insert the 2 batteries and push back the cover. Reminder, do not mix old and new batteries.

olay-skincare-facial-cleansing-device-and-batteries

The device has 2 rubber buttons, 1 to switch it on or off and 1 to control speed. I prefer to use basic speed versus the faster one but this will depend on your personal preference.

skincare-facial-cleansing-device-anti-aging-set

skincare-facial-cleansing-device-anti-aging-set
This set comes with 1 brush head, which is easy to snap onto the device. It is recommended to replace the brush head every 3 months. I haven’t replaced mine after more than 3 months, haha, but it still works fine and, don’t worry, the brush head is not disgusting or dirty-looking (yet).
A 20ml skin renewal cleanser is packed inside this set but you don’t necessarily need to use it together with the device. We all have our preferred cleanser so feel free to use the device with your favorite brand. I have a habit of trying new brands and products every now and then. I’ve used the Olay Cleansing Device with different brands like Garnier, Neutrogena and Shizens.

skincare-olay-regenerist-facial-cleansing-device-anti-aging-set
For the past 6 months, I’ve been using this device every evening to cleanse my face. Initially, I tried using it day and night but I developed a few pimples, around 2-3 (oh yes, I will count them coz I rarely get these!), so I decided to slow down and use it at night only. For someone who has not tried cleansing devices before, it probably ‘surprised’ my skin. When I limited use to once a day, the pimples stopped, yay! And the fun starts.
My skin does feel instantly cleaner, in a different way than it feels with normal deep cleansing without a device. And though it’s not Clarisonic, I’d say it does a good job in complementing my skin-cleansing regimen. So if you want to start exploring facial cleansing devices and you’re on a tight budget, the Olay Regenerist Advanced Cleansing System is good bet.
Replacement cleansing brush heads are available at www.watsons.com.my – RM29.90 for a boxed set of 2 pieces

Philips and Disney Work Together To Light Children’s Imagination

Philips announces new Philips and Disney Product Line in Malaysia. Children can discover a whole new world of inspiration, enchantment and magic through light.

Philips Disney SoftPal Mickey – it’s a HUGGABLE LAMP!

My son is turning 5 years old in November and my next challenge is to train him how to sleep alone in his own bedroom. To be very honest, it worries me. First, how do I get him to even lie down on a bed outside our current bedroom? Second, what if he wakes up at night and discovers that I’m not at his side? Will he cry? Will he panic? How can I get him to feel comfortable being alone?
My first thought was to make his room themed to his favorite cartoon characters so he’d be more comfortable to be inside it. Maybe use a bed sheet and pillowcases with Disney’s Lightning McQueen. I’m even thinking of getting him a bed shaped like a racing car. But I haven’t thought of lighting yet. It’s amazing to discover how these small elements in a child’s room can make so much difference to their comfort and well being.

philips_disney_launch_imaginative_lighting_hamleys
Royal Philips, a global leader in lighting, announces its partnership with family entertainment giant Disney to develop a range of inspiring, magical, and playfullighting products for children, parents, and everyone young-at-heart. Philips and Disney lighting, available in Malaysia, combines Philips’ groundbreaking innovation in lighting with the magic of Disney characters and storytelling to transform a child’s bedroom into a more creative place for bedtime stories and a restful environment for a good night’s sleep. I’ve already developed a nightly routine of reading stories to my son before he sleeps and it’s important for me to keep this habit of learning and imagination.

philips_disney_softpals_imaginative_lighting_launch_at_hamleys

My first visit to Hamleys in One Utama

The launch – held at the Malaysian branch of Hamleys in the new wing of One Utama, saw 15 children aged from 4 to 9 years embarking on fun activities such as a mini race to look for Philips and Disney lighting products. They were also given pillows to build their own pillow fortressas part of engagement activities to encourage them to use their imagination. PILLOW FORTRESS?I didn’t even know there was a term for that play stuff where kids create a “house” or “dungeon” using their pillows. Wow, I learned something new.
As an (ex) interior designer, I have learned that lighting plays a significant role in creating the ambience of a room and it affects the people who dwell in it. Studies show that lighting has a strong impact on an individual’s mood, and the right lighting can help everyone, from children to adults, fall asleep and wake more naturally so that they can concentrate, perform tasks better, and simply feel happier during their waking hours. Philips and Disney Lighting is designed with children in mind, in order to provide the best lighting for their bedrooms. Whether parents need help encouraging their children to sleep or wake, Philips and Disney’s range of compact, portable lighting products can help.

Philips Disney SoftPal Mike at RM199

The most interesting Philips and Disney product that I’ve seen that day was the SoftPals. These soft, nighttime companions introduce just enough light to chase away the bumps in the night, without interrupting children’s natural sleep patterns. It’s an adorable soft lamp that our kids can hug and play with! Isn’t that amazing? I’ve never heard of something like it. Philips and Disney have truly done an innovative invention.

Designed with children in mind, the Philips and Disney lighting products transform the bedroom into a magical world. Philips is excited to bring these products to Malaysia and give new meaning to children’s bedtime.”
The product range is equipped with child-friendly features like the Smart Philips LED bulbs designed to last for years and stay cool to the touch to protect little fingers. 4 Expert Tips to Prevent Facebook Account Theft

Have you or some of your friends experienced account theft or “hacking” from social media accounts? Kaspersky shares some expert advice to protect yourself from cybercrime

prevent_account_theft_online

I guess a lot of us have encountered shout outs from our friends or relatives saying their account have been hacked and that they only have 1 account. I do recall wondering why some of my existing Facebook friends would suddenly send me another friend request when we already are connected. I still receive this once in a while and due to the increasing cybercrime nowadays, to double check that I’m really connecting with the right person, I send a message to the original friend account asking if it’s him or her asking for the 2nd connection. Well, it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
Statistics released in May of last year show that the amount of Facebook users in Malaysia amount to 13.3 million, equivalent to 45.5 per cent of the Malaysian population at that time, which ranked Malaysia as 8th in Asia and 21st in the world. Facebook users now transcend age and it is important that we are all made aware of the dangers of not being alert when using Facebook.
Facebook remains the preferred target for cybercriminals who specialize in stealing social network accounts: according to Kaspersky Lab’s statistics, in Q1 2014 fake sites imitating Facebook accounted for 10.85% of all instances when the heuristic anti-phishing component was triggered. Only fake Yahoo pages sparked more phishing alerts, leaving Facebook the prime target among social networking sites.
Today’s Facebook fakery is a global business, with cybercriminals attacking the site in a variety of languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Arabic and others.

Unauthorized access to accounts in Facebook or any other social network can be used to spread phishing links or malware. Cybercriminals also use stolen accounts to send spam to the victims’ contact lists and publish spam on their friends’ walls where it can be seen by other users, or to spread messages asking their friends to send urgent financial assistance. Hijacked accounts can also be used to collect information on individuals for use in future targeted attacks.
Smartphone or tablet owners who visit social networks from their mobile devices are also at risk of having their personal data stolen. To make matters worse, some mobile browsers hide the address bar while opening the page, which makes it much more difficult for users to spot fake resources.
“Cybercriminals have developed a number of ways to entice their victims to pages with phishing content. They send links to phishing web pages via email or within social networks or in banners placed on third-party resources. Fraudsters often lure their victims by promising them ‘interesting content’. When users follow the link provided, they land on a fake login page that contains a standard message asking them to log in before viewing the page. If users don’t become suspicious and enter their credentials, their data will immediately be dispatched to cybercriminals,” said Nadezhda Demidova, Web Content Analyst, Kaspersky Lab.
important_tips_to_prevent_online_identity_theft

4 Expert advice to prevent account theft
  1. If you receive an email notification from Facebook or a message that your account may be blocked, never enter your credentials in a form attached to that message. Facebook never asks users to enter their password in an email or to send a password via email.
  2. Place the cursor on the link and check if it leads to the official Facebook page. Moreover, you should manually type the Facebook URL into the address bar – cybercriminals are capable of concealing the addresses to which they are leading you.
  3. When you have manually entered the URL in the address bar, check it again after the page has loaded to make sure it has not been spoofed.
  4. Remember that Facebook uses the HTTPS protocol to transmit data (check your URL bar, it should say https://to know that you’re in a secured site). The absence of a secure connection probably means that you are visiting a fraudulent site even if the URL address seems to be correct.

World Cup 2014: Tips for Using ATMs and Avoiding Credit Card Cloning

Are you traveling to Brazil for the World Cup? Kaspersky Lab shares some tips to avoid ‘card mishaps’ while overseas
world_cup_brazil_2014_colorful_poster

If you’ve purchased a ticket to Brazil for the World Cup or even for a holiday, this is definitely something that you should be aware of. Besides, even if you have no immediate plans to go there, most of these tips are applicable even in Malaysia or other countries. After all, better safe than sorry!

If you still haven’t decided how you plan to pay your bills while you’re in Brazil – cash or credit card – it is high time to do so. Kaspersky Lab warns that Brazil has some of the most creative and active criminals specializing in credit card cloning. And, unfortunately, they love to target foreigners who don’t know how to protect their cards when withdrawing money from an ATM or paying for their drinks in a restaurant. But our experts have some useful tips to protect against the most common attacks on ATMs and point of sales (PoS) devices in Brazil.

world_cup_brazil_avoid_card_cloning_while_shopping

Avoiding credit card cloning
PoS devices are very common in Brazil – according tothe Brazilian Central Bank, credit and debit cards account for 70% of all payments in the country. Chip-and-PIN cards are accepted by almost all businesses, even by cab drivers.
  • Tips: despite some recent newsabout security flaws in this protocol, chip-and-PIN cards are still more secure and harder to clone than magnetic swipe cards. If you don’t already have this type of card, ask your bank if it’s possible to get one before you travel.

In Europe and North America, many people are in the habit of handing over their cards to staff in restaurants and stores. In Brazil, this can be dangerous.
  • Tips: please don’t do this – you’re presenting fraudsters with a golden opportunity to clone the card, and the temptation is inevitably too strong to resist. Ask the staff to bring the electronic payment terminal to you.

  • Be careful of chance encounters or accidents which might take your card out of reach for a moment. If it happens, check that the card you get back is really yours. If you have any doubts, report it immediately to the bank.

PoS and PIN-pad malware
So-called Chupa Cabra malware and Trojan-Spy.Win32.SPSniffer, a malware family with several variants developed in Brazil and seen in the wild since 2010, affects PoS and PIN-pad devices, both of which are very common in the country. These devices are connected to a computer via a USB or serial port to communicate with electronic funds transfer (EFT) software. The Trojan infects the computer and sniffs the data transmitted through these ports.
The PIN is encrypted as soon as it is entered, most commonly using triple DES encryption. But Track 1 data (credit card number, expiration date, service code and CVV) and the public chip data aren’t encrypted in the hardware of old and outdated devices. These are sent in plain text to the PC via USB or serial ports. Capturing this data is enough to clone a credit card.
·       Please keep a close eye on your credit card statement to check all transactions and inform your bank immediately if you see something suspicious.
·       Wherever possible try to pay using a wireless PoSdevice – they are a bit more secure than the older ones connected to serial or USB ports.
Using ATMs in Brazil
Brazil has 118 ATMs per 100,000 adults according to the World Bank, placing it ninth in the world in terms of ATM numbers. This presents lots of opportunities for fraudsters to install skimmers, also known as “Chupa Cabra” devices.
·       Tips: use your hand to cover the keypad while you enter your PIN, it is a great way to foil most skimmers, which tend to rely on hidden cameras.
·       If you see something that doesn’t look right, notify the bank or owner of the machine, and go somewhere else to withdraw your cash.
world_cup_2014_atm_and_card_safety_tips

“Be cautious while using ATMs or paying with your credit card. Don’t forget that cybercriminals in Brazil perform their malicious schemes all the time. Even during the day you can see them hanging out, wearing flip-flops and beachwear while installing skimmers in a crowded bank. Also remember that it’s far more secure if your transactions happen right in front of you. Be careful of chance encounters or accidents, which might take your card out of reach for a moment. If that happens, check that the card you get back is really yours. If you have any doubts, immediately report the incident to the bank,” said Fabio Assolini, Senior Security Researcher with Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research & Analysis Team.
More information can be found at securelist.com.

So to everyone, whether you’re going to Brazil or anywhere, be cautious of how you use your ATM and credit cards. Happy shopping!

philips-fidelio-htl-9100-detachable-speakers
Philips Fidelio Soundbar HTL9100 is now in Malaysia!
The multiple award-winning Philips Fidelio Soundbar HTL9100 is the first to feature detachable wireless side speakers that when removed, changes the soundbar from virtual surround sound to 5.1 channel surround sound on demand.  The HTL9100 features a wireless subwoofer with the stylish high-end design consumers have come to love and expect from the Fidelio line.

philips-fidelio-htl-9100-detachable-speakers
The Philips Fidelio HTL9100 Soundbar is a clever and simple wireless system that provides consumers with the convenience of saving on space in their homes without the hassle of dealing with a mess of wires thereby enjoying a truly cinematic experience in the comfort of one’s own home.
According to the WOOX Innovations Malaysia, Business Leader, Mr. Andrew Tan, the Philips Fidelio SoundBar HTL9100 is the first of its kind to feature wireless detachable speakers that automatically changes the soundbar from Virtual Surround Sound to 5.1 Channel Surround Sound on Demand when the speakers are removed from the main console.

philips-fidelio-htl-9100-detachable-speakers
“Soundbars are simply speakers in a bar that save space and boost TV sound. Many come with subwoofers and a growing number are Bluetooth-enabled but the sound quality tends to be lacking. The Philips Fidelio HTL9100 is different as it delivers convincing 5.1 Channel surround sound,” Mr. Tan explained.
The Philips Fidelio SoundBar HTL9100 was awarded the Home Theater Innovation 2013-2014 Award by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) in 2013.

philips-fidelio-htl-9100-detachable-speakers
“New homes in Malaysia, especially condominiums and apartments seem to be getting smaller and space is at a premium.  A full surround home theatre system simply takes up too much space and is not practical for high-rise dwellers.  We have received many requests for the Philips Fidelio HTL9100 from Malaysian consumers and are confident of its appeal to discerning audiophiles who are faced with space and budgetary constraints,” said Mr. Tan.
“We understand that with rising prices, consumers are looking for innovative, space-saving, design driven solutions to suit their lives and lifestyles.  This is why we have various introductory offers that will offer even more value,” Mr. Tan said.
HOT DEAL at Harvey Norman IPC Atrium Roadshow until 16th March!
Only at Harvey Norman outlets, every unit of HTL9100 purchased during the IPC Atrium Roadshow from March 12 – 16 will entitle the buyer to purchase the Philips HMP8100, a media player at only RM99, instead of the usual price of RM699, as well as receive a RM200 discount voucher.
The RM200 discount voucher can be used for the purchase of the HTL9100 Soundbar.   Any purchase of RM500 and above of Philips Audio products consumers will be entitled to participate in a lucky dip that offer premium prizes.
The Philips Fidelio Soundbar HTL9100 retails for RM2,999 and is available at all major retail outlets.
Design
A sleek black silver banded cylindrical artifact, the Philips Fidelio HTL9100 is a minimalist masterpiece designed specifically for people who have limited space.  The ends can be removed to become wireless rear satellite speakers, communicating with the main unit via 5.8GHz signal to avoid interference from Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signals.  They run on rechargeable batteries that last up to 10 hours before returning to the main bar to be recharged.

The iPad Air is already here in Malaysia!

iPad-Air-Malaysia-price

In case you haven’t noticed, the iPad Air has finally arrived in Malaysia! It was launched last Thursday, 5th December 2013.

iPad-Air-Malaysia-price-Mac-City
Apple has done it again. It’s really amazing how Apple keeps getting innovative in launching new products. I’ve been eyeing the MacBook Air for quite some time now (this is actually my next target) as I now want my gadget for writing and photo editing to be more ‘mobile-friendly’. I’m happy with my MacBook Pro but it  can be heavy to bring around.
Anyway, back to iPad Air. I have an iPad 2 for my son and it can also get heavy to bring around. So if you are the type of person who is very dependent on your iPad to get things done, the iPad Air is perfect!
What to expect from the amazing iPad Air:
All-new design
iPad Air weighs less than half a kilo, and it’s 20 per cent thinner.2 But even though it’s extremely light, it has a refined aluminium unibody enclosure that feels solid and durable in your hand.
9.7-inch Retina display
Photos and videos look incredibly detailed and text is razor sharp on the stunning Retina display, which features over 3.1 million pixels — a million more than an HDTV.
A7 chip
The powerful and power-efficient A7 chip with 64-bit architecture makes everything remarkably responsive — while still delivering up to 10 hours of battery life.
Ultra-fast wireless
Now you can get up to 2x faster Wi-Fi performance using 802.11n with MIMO.4 And the Wi-Fi + Cellular model supports more networks for fast connections the world over.
Powerful apps included
iPad comes with great apps for sending email, browsing the web and making video calls. It also includes apps that let you do amazing things with your photos, movies, music, documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
Over 475,000 apps on the App Store
No matter what you love to do, there’s probably an app for that. And because these apps are made specifically for iPad, they take full advantage of its advanced technologies.
What’s the difference in storage sizes?
iPad Air comes in four storage sizes: 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. The term “GB” stands for gigabytes. The more gigabytes you have, the more content you can store on your iPad — apps, HD videos, movies, photos, books, magazines, and more. If, for example, you have a large music library or you frequently download HD movies, it’s a good idea to consider an iPad with a larger storage capacity. If you have a relatively small music or photo library or rarely make or buy movies, an iPad with a smaller capacity may be better for you. Of course, over time you will add more content to your iPad, so you’ll want to think about how your storage needs may evolve.
What will you get inside the iPad Air box:
iPad Air
Lightning to USB Cable
12W USB Power Adapter
iOS 7
iOS is even easier to use with features like Control Centre, AirDrop and smarter multitasking. And because it’s designed for iPad, everything not only looks beautiful, it runs beautifully.

Limited warranty
Every iPad Air comes with complimentary telephone technical support for 90 days from your iPad Air purchase date and a one-year limited warranty.
You even have the option to purchase the new iPad Air online at http://store.apple.com/my/ipad and enjoy free shipping on orders above RM250.
As usual, there are 2 colors: Space Grey and Silver (no price difference on color). I’d choose Space Grey…

You have options on sizes and prices for WiFi model: 16GB (RM1599), 32GB (RM1929), 64GB (RM2249) and 128GB (RM2579). If you are the type who stores loads of data, files, videos, photos and software on your iPad, then you might need to consider the bigger sizes. But if you’re like me whose iPad is for entertaining and teaching your child with occasional usage for work, 16GB will do.

Models with WiFi + Cellular are slightly more expensive:

Main differences of the iPad Air from iPad 2 are the following:
  1. Superb lightness of 135g than iPad 2
  2. Definitely better Retina display and resolution
  3. Thinner dimension, making it easier to slip into a bag or envelope
  4. A7 chip on iPad Air
  5. Better Facetime HD camera and features
  6. iSight camera
  7. Lighting connector which makes iPad Air faster to charge than iPad 2
  8. Nano-Sim vs Micro Sim

The iPad Air will definitely be a great gadget to have and even a wonderful gift for our loved ones. By the way, when you order online, you can add FREE custom engraving to the iPad. Say ‘I love you’ or ‘Thank You’ or ‘Happy Anniversary’ in high-tech style!

My Machines Service Centre Experience

macbook-pro

I’ve wanted to send my MacBook Pro to the Machines Service Center since last year but somehow I just never got to do it until 2 weeks ago. I purchased my MacBook in December 2011 and I think it deserves some ‘check-up’ or whatever. There’s nothing wrong really; in fact, I’m in love with this Mac very much. Fast, efficient and reliable.
But I guess all gadgets encounter some weakness or glitch somewhere. I enjoy editing photos and since I’ve taken blogging more seriously early this year, I’ve been using a photo editor program more frequently than before. When I got my MacBook, I purchased this editor program from iTunes called Pixelmator. Well, yeah, Photoshop would have been the best choice but I find it too expensive for my personal use. I’m not a graphic designer or professional photographer so I needed something not so expensive. Anyway, I am satisfied with the features of Pixelmator, which are comparable to Photoshop, but there are a few occasions when it suddenly exits the program without warning. It never happens in my other programs but I might have been ignoring the prompts to update the software. However, when I tried to update Pixelmator, I was prompted to update my Mac software first. I tried updating the Mac software but it was never completed so I knew I needed professional assistance from Mac.
And so one sunny morning, I drove to Mid Valley and walked to Northpoint Offices where a Machines Service Centre is located. It is quite easy to locate at the Ground Floor of Block B, Northpoint Offices, as it is brightly lit and it has see-through glass walls.
Machines has a pretty cool queuing system. Upon entry, you’ll be welcomed by iPads where you will type your name and you’ll get a virtual queue number.

I also can’t help but notice these cute feedback or comments boxes by the wall. I find it simple but innovative and proactive in trying to get feedback from customers. Don’t you find a lot of other feedback boxes boring and traditional in a form of drop box with a phrase ‘comments/suggestions’ printed on it? And normally it is hidden somewhere, in a corner or an unnoticeable place? Machines feedback boxes look fun and they were very visible to visitors. And notice that they have 3 facial expressions that tell you they’re open to happy, sad and very sad feedback. Now, this is what I call ‘asking for feedback’.

machines-service-centre
There were more than 10 customers inside the centre when I arrived. But I was quite surprised of the fast service. I was number 15 but it only took me 8 minutes to wait. The service guys were fast and I saw that customers walk out with their concerns settled.

machines-service-centre
See, number 14 and me being served at the same time.
I told the Machines IT staff about my concern and he immediately proceeded to updating my Mac software.
One of the things I appreciated about this visit to Machines was that I didn’t have to go through any checking of my details, no need to dig info about when or where did I buy my Mac, no nitty-gritty inquiries. They just quickly solve my Mac problem.
My baby getting his dose of updated Mac software…

In a short while, the service center was deserted and quiet except for me and another guest. I was left behind because the software update has 4GB worth of data to download. No wonder I wasn’t able to do it myself. I guess my Internet at home wasn’t good enough.

machines-service-centre
Check out the comfy chairs at Machines. Isn’t it wonderful to find a waiting area like this? I’ve been to a few customer service outlets including big players in other industries such as telecommunications. And so far (and I’m sure you’ve also noticed), most of them do not provide comfy chairs. They would have a few lounge chairs, sometimes without back support so it can be tiring to wait, especially when the service takes long.

machines-service-centre
Machines also has a coffee machine for guests to have while waiting. Drinking water is also available.

machines-service-centre
In front of the service team, there are a lot of stools for guests being served. Again, I think this is very good as it shows they welcome guests with friends or relatives who accompany them to visit. Comparing it to other brands, Machines does a great job in making people comfortable and welcome. This is something you won’t easily find in other technology-related industries.

machines-service-centre
Oooh, and during my visit, they were having clearance sale for iPad 2 covers. Check out the eye-popping colors! And these are only at RM20 from normal price of RM109.
My software update was completed and I was happy to go back home with a more efficient MacBook. I’ve already updated my Pixelmator, which is now even better than before. No more sudden program exits.
I am thankful to the Machines team at Northpoint Offices. They were very efficient and helpful.
To sum it up, why did I enjoy my first visit to Machines Service Centre:
  • Cool queuing system via iPad and virtual number – no need to hold paper with number
  • Comfortable waiting chairs
  • Drinks available for everyone
  • Short waiting time
  • No long inquiries
  • Fast and efficient service
  • Problem solved

My 8 De-stressing Habits that Keep Me Sane and Happy

One of the important things I learned in life is that there will be a cause of stress everywhere we go, in whatever we do, whether at work, at home, at the road…wherever, whenever. To wish for a stress-free life is just wishing not to live at all. What I’ve accepted is that I either change the way I look at the things around me or my life will be unhappy and stressful.

I’m actually quite surprised to meet people who just choose to focus on the bad and stressful things rather than counting the good things they have. Work will always be tough and full of challenges especially when you’ve reached a certain level of position where you hold heavy responsibilities. I believe that there’s always a choice for everyone. If you don’t want to accept this set of duties that also come with some causes for stress, then there’s a choice for you to either leave that job or take a lower position. But complaining about everything to your colleagues or friends or relatives can become pointless if it becomes a daily habit.

The world wouldn’t change for us; we can only change ourselves. I choose to be in control of my life as much as I can, and I don’t want stress to be on top of my daily life. I’ve had my share of stressful years and I’ve realized that it’s just impossible to be happy unless I change or improve myself. So I am pleased to share 8 useful habits that I’ve developed through the years. Hope these can be useful to people facing a stressful life, especially working mothers like me:

1. Read.

Reading is a great way to take my mind off from the daily challenges of work while at the same time, gives me additional knowledge that I won’t get from just spending more time on ‘stressing’ myself about work.  I cannot imagine what my life would be if I don’t spend time reading. It doesn’t have to be reading novels or thick books at all. I regularly read Female magazine and Women’s Weekly where I get the latest beauty and fashion buzz. Of course, I don’t want to miss the celebrity articles and health news. And although I am not in the beauty industry anymore, I am still inclined (or hooked) to finding out the latest beauty products and reviews.

I also read Archie books! Well, you might say, ‘grow up!’ but Archie comic books are one of those classics that you won’t mind reading. When I was younger, reading an Archie comic book is already a luxury since I cannot afford to buy one. I have these 2 thick books recently sent to me by my sweet sister from Philippines.

I read books as well. I was a total bookworm since I was 8. I used to borrow several books from the library and I’m probably the only kid who manages to fill-up the entire library card in a few months. I read, read, and read everyday. So here are some of my books at the moment: Between You and I (something that I picked up for only RM15!), Drink Me (a wine book), and the Wrinkle Cure (by Dr. Nicholas Perricone who has a superb line of beauty products).

2. Take care of your skin.

I’m surprised when people keep saying that they don’t have time to apply beauty products everyday. Taking care of your skin not only serves the purpose of maintaining its health but also a great way to de-stress. Spending a few minutes in front of the mirror just applying toner, serum and moisturizer gives you time to think of yourself and off from those stressful issues.

3. Blog.

I’m not talking about becoming a full-time blogger. If you are someone with a lot of things going on in your mind, having an outlet such as a blog can prove to be fun and relaxing. Try doing it for fun and share your thoughts about the things you enjoy, your experiences and maybe your knowledge. You’ll be surprised at how it can make you feel better and you’ll even meet wonderful people who blog as well and be a part of a social community.

4. Take photos.

You don’t have to be a professional photographer. Just simple ways such as using your phone or normal digital camera will do. Paying attention to moments captured with your camera is a great way to learn how to appreciate time, colors and more. How do you feel when you look at your past photos? Those throw-back Thursday pictures? Don’t they remind you of happier days? That silly hair or silly get-up?

5. Spend quality time with your children.

Or with your nieces, nephews if you don’t have your own child yet. Taking time to color those drawings, learning letters, numbers, painting will give you a sense of happiness that will ease your mind. Those people who spend time with their relatives’ children and take care of them amaze me. You will notice that they tend to be warmer, kind and patient in the working environment. So go ahead and try to spend time with a kid or two. You’ll be surprised at how long your patience can be extended!

6. Play games.

Maybe some of you may find it silly but having a few games on your phone can be helpful as long as you’re not addicted to it and you don’t make your daily life revolve around those farms, candies or whatnot. When you find yourself angry or frustrated at work or anywhere (this does not apply to driving frustration, by the way), take a few minutes during your break to play a game.

7. Exercise.

This is great for health AND de-stressing. I’ve been engaged with a quick daily workout for several weeks now and I found out that it’s liberating! Start with something simple if you haven’t done exercising for quite some time. I downloaded this app called the 7-minute workout and it does wonders. You only need 7 minutes daily, follow the steps and timing from the app and you’re done! Trust me, this can get you sweating within those few minutes. And my tummy has become firmer in just 2 weeks.

And if you are not ready to do daily exercise, try doing something every weekend. Maybe running every Saturday morning or evening? Give it a try. It gives you good time to clear your mind.

8. Accept that life is not fair.

At a young age, I’ve learned that life is simply not fair. The moment you are born, you will have certain sets of privileges or difficulties already laid out for you. You will have certain benefits and challenges that will be different from another person. Or if you are very unlucky, you will be struggling from the moment you were born. This is the way life is. I don’t believe that life will ever be fair. Somewhere, somehow, there are people having a harder or better life than us. Don’t compare or ask why some have so much money or why that person gets a higher pay than you do. Do not expect that your desires will be laid out in front of you to pick. Do not think that just because people have more money means that they don’t have problems. Each person has his own challenges to face and accomplish.

Some people also think that their bosses have an easier life than them and tend to do self-pity, and this leads to stress. For me, I don’t think that bosses have easier lives. In fact, they are carrying a very heavy burden especially if they own the business. Imagine the daily pressure of making the business profitable enough to pay for our salaries? Who gets cursing from the top management or directors when objectives are not achieved? Is it you or your boss? Some employees don’t look at it this way, leading to unhappy work life. We all have our own challenges, whether you are an employee, a business owner, CEO, or a housewife. I’ve accepted that life is not fair which means I have to depend on myself to get the things I want in life. This thought has liberated me at a young age and has since worked hard for the achievement I desire. And it has been really great! What better sense of fulfillment than what you achieved on your own, right? Life is not fair but life can be good!

A Few of my Favorite Things

My Favorite Things by Maria – The Sound of Music

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

Brown paper packages tied up with strings

These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels

Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles

Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings

These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes

Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes

Silver white winters that melt into springs

These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don’t feel so bad

(lyrics source: stlyrics.com)

I just celebrated my 33rd birthday a few weeks ago. At times, I still find it hard to believe how far I’ve gone from my life just almost 5 years before. And in celebration of a good and blessed life, I am enumerating the things in my life that I’m thankful for…plus a few of my favorite (material) things.

1) My husband

Wedding in Boracay

Don’t get me wrong, I truly believe that there’s no perfect marriage. It is no fairy tale where the princess marries the prince and they live happily ever after, the end. The truth is, marriage only starts after the wedding and this is where ‘work’ begins. There will be tough times, there will be tougher times. But after everything I’ve gone through, from letting go of everything I have back in my home country, to being in a foreign land with nothing but my clothes (and a few beauty products), no job, no friends…my husband has kept his promise that I will never be hungry.

My husband has been true and loyal after all these years, after all the pregnancy weight and post-pregnancy kilos I’ve never lost. There are times of disappointments but he’s been ever loving and supportive of my decisions. Some wives are tied down with their partners’ manipulation and control while I am blessed to make my own choices and be respected for it. When I arrived in Malaysia more than 4 years back, I had nothing. But now, I am pursuing my aspirations and having a wonderful life. My husband has been strong through it all, and has been my most loyal friend.

2) My son
The breadth and source of my very strength for the past 3 years and for the years to come. Motherhood completely changed my life, the way I look at things, my habits, my choices ad my personality. Before my son came into my life, I was a hot-tempered biatch at work and I can easily raise my voice, bang the table and scold people. Now, I’ve learned how to be patient and more. My priorities and choices revolve around him. I work even harder than before, making tougher decisions and more. But most of all, I aim to be the best person, achieve the highest I can and prepare the best possible future, all for him.

3) My In-Laws

It’s not easy to find couples who can confidently say that they are thankful for their in-laws. In my case, I am very blessed to have in-laws who are very concerned, understanding, supportive and loving. All through these years, they’ve been on my side, always lending a helping hand. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t know how my husband and I could have gone through all the tough times when we first arrived. And now, they are the ones taking care of my son while I work, which is totally priceless. I cannot imagine how our lives would be without my in-laws being there for Aden.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law have also been there for us. I still recall my pregnancy days and they helped us with things like baby items, food and other things that we might need. Whether small or big stuff, they’ve been generous and always thoughtful. In this time and life, I know that it’s not everyday for anyone to get blessed with a family like this.

4) My parents, sisters and brother, and my relatives back home

Life is never easy but we need to find ways to be happy, find simple joys in everyday life. At a young age, I’ve known what it’s like to have a not-so-easy life, and so I learned to work hard, make better decisions to reach my goals. There were a lot of hard times but these hard times made me a tougher person. I learn how to appreciate good times and other blessings even more because I knew what it’s like to be on the other side.

5) True friends

Good laughs, tears, sweat, tough professors, mean bosses, crushes, shopping…some things are just best shared and appreciated with true friends. Although some of us are very far apart, we still manage to share some laughs, heartaches and all.

6) Tough Bosses who make you learn important things

I’ve been so blessed to have bosses who manage to bring out the best in me, whether intentionally done or not. I know that we all looooove to complain about our bosses but truth is, they make us tougher and do better than our normal, easy-going selves. People tend to find a comfort zone and without those tough (and sometimes heartless) people in our lives, we wouldn’t be challenged and life will just be boring.

7) Photographers, Graphic Designers

Working with professional photographers and very creative graphic designers had been, and still is, a great joy in my career. I actually graduated as an interior designer (huwhat?) so creatives, colors and stuff grab my interest. But there’s something about photography and combining graphic design elements into an artwork that really gives me a sense of fulfillment.

And here are some of my favorite material stuff…not to be mistaken as of equal importance as the above but, nevertheless, these stuff still give a smile on my face:

8) iPhone 5

This is just the best mobile gadget for me. I love the camera, love the speed, love the interface and all. For the past years, I’ve tried different brands, different types…but this, by far, outruns them all. Not everyone will agree but as a personal choice, iPhone 5 works best for me.

iPhone5: One of my Precious-es

9) MacBook Pro

I guess I just have the ‘need for speed’. I hate working on computers that hang on minor applications, especially when you’re shifting from 1 design program to another. I’m not a full-time designer but I occasionally enjoy photo editing and some small artworks every now and then. The Mac’s interface is just superb with its multi-touch trackpad. Swipe and shift programs easily with your fingers. Quick. Easy. Genius.
A few years back when I started working for an international lingerie brand and I saw a Mac for the first time, I was awestruck. Well, I thought, will I ever be able to afford that? Will I even understand how to use one? And, thank God, I was. It was worth every RM.

MacBook Pro: Speed and creativity at my fingertips

10) Kate Spade Red Tote Bag

I’m not really the type who splurges on designer bags, not that I can even afford to. But I saw this bag and it called my name (!). The leather is wonderful, the color is delicious and the design is simple yet classy. At first, I thought that red will be very hard to match with clothes but it just works fine with any color. With the mix-and-match trend in fashion now, sporting a red bag with an attire can make a statement.

Kate Spade Red Leather Bag with Gold Accents

11) Clairol Herbal Essences Coconut Milk

Yes, yes, like most of the other ladies out there, I am hoping that one shampoo or conditioner can solve all my hair problems. Though it doesn’t magically turn my hair into that soft-flowing, captivating bundle of strands like in TV commercials, this Clairol Herbal Essence Coconut Milk keeps my hair more moisturized than other conditioners that I’ve tried. The lasting scent is a definite plus and it’s very affordable if not cheap for most. The shampoo is just as nice because it doesn’t dry my hair out like others. I even explored  more expensive brands, salon brands, professional brands but I still go back to Herbal Essences.

Clairol Herbal Essences Coconut Milk Conditioner

12) Canon EOS100D

I finally got my hands on my very first DSLR! I’ve actually been dreaming of owning one for several years. It’s not cheap and for the past few years, I wasn’t confident enough to invest on one because I rarely have time to just take pictures as I’m so busy with work. It wouldn’t be worth it to buy one and just keep it, right? But the time has come for me to pursue my other passion in life while still maintaining my career in marketing. Thank God for all the blessings. I now have some good regular time for my son and myself.

The Canon EOS 100D was just recently released and in good timing for my decision to buy a DSLR. It is the lightest and smallest DSLR ever launched (for now) and it fits comfortably on a beginner’s hand. And it’s just amazingly light. I’ve been taking photos since I bought it, of course, excitedly, and the results are just so different and a lot better than my normal point-and-shoot digital camera. I can now take photos of Aden even if he moves a lot and take photos for my blogs more beautifully.

My first DSLR: Canon EOS 100D

13) Perricone MD Intensive Pore Minimizer

I had a post about this great product at http://bit.ly/19BZkY6 This pore minimizer gave me visible results and the longer I use it, the more my skin becomes smoother, the smaller my pores become. I just love how my skin’s texture has improved within the past months. I’ll be finishing it soon so gotta buy another one!

14) Biore Pore Strips

Being obsessed with my huge pores, I constantly explore products to reduce their size or at least, keep it free from blackheads and whiteheads. But this is just almost impossible for me so I’ve been regularly cleaning my pores with pore strips. I do this every Saturday and I’m quite addicted to seeing those tiny, icky stuff all stuck to the strip! I’ve tried different brands at different prices. But Biore pore strips at only RM10.80 for 10 strips have been the most effective. Other strips don’t have cuttings on some corners that should adapt to the curves of our nose and cheeks which make it a bit inefficient. Biore has cutting on several corners, making it follow the contour of the nose, especially the fold between the nose and cheeks.

15) Crabtree & Evelyn Iris Triple Milled Soap

Normally, I don’t really use bar soaps but when my sister-in-law gave me an Iris bath set, the scent of the triple milled soap was simply bewitching! So I got another set from Crabtree; there’s no 1-piece for sale so I had to get the 3-piece set… But it’s reasonable at only RM65 per set.

Crabtree & Evelyn Iris Triple Miled Soap set of 3

16) Guerlain Idylle Duet EDP – Rose Patchouli

This is my special occasion fragrance. The floral scent is very classy and smells even lovelier as time wears on. When it comes to fragrance, I go for floral scents, not fruity and not the sporty scent. (Surprisingly, when it comes to skincare products, I have to avoid those with rose and other very floral scents as I tend to get some skin reaction to it.)
I love the sexy bottle, showing very feminine and glamorous curves. I prefer bottles that are transparent where you can see the contents so this makes Guerlain Idylle’s bottle even more attractive to me. Small thing but I don’t like those opaque bottles wherein I need to guess if it’s about to finish or not. And after all, one of the factors that makes a perfume attractive is the packaging. Save, of course, for Chanel No. 5 which has a simple bottle but still remains to be one of the most (if not THE most) popular fragrances in the world.

Guerlain Idylle Duet – Rose Patchouli

17) The Body Shop – White Musk EDT & Moroccan Rose EDT

On normal days, I like to wear these Body Shop EDTs. The famous White Musk has a light, wonderful and simply soothing scent. It has combined notes of jasmine, rose, musk, lily and I guess some other more beautiful floral scents (I am no fragrance expert, haha). At a price of RM59 for 30ml, this EDT is worth to have as a daily part of my body care routine.

I also love the Body Shop’s Moroccan Rose. By now you can tell that I’m quite addicted to rose fragrance (!). This EDT has a romantic, feminine, light and fresh scent. And being named Moroccan, it adds some mystery and uniqueness to it. Very nice for daily wear and special occasions, too.

The Body Shop Moroccan Rose EDT & White Musk EDT

18) Dorothy Perkins Black Belt

For some time, I’ve been looking for a simple but nice black belt. If not expensive, designer type, I can only see very posh and accessorized belt which I don’t really go for. I needed something simple, good enough for corporate wear so it cannot be too stylized with all those shining stones all over it. One fine evening in Mid Valley, I came across this simple, nice belt from Dorothy Perkins and I loved it! If I remember it right, I got this belt for only RM39. Very reasonable price for a belt like this.

19) Monthly Issue of Female & Women’s Weekly Magazines

Every month, I must always have a copy of these 2 magazines. I love the beauty and fashion articles, photos and updates. Presentation is very good, writing style is funky and smart. Female always contains the latest in beauty and fashion while Women’s Weekly has very interesting reads about family and life.

20) Solvil El Titus Purple Watch

I just got this watch last February as a Valentine’s Day present from my hubby. I really love the purple color, the lovely glimmer of stones and the size against my wrist. I like that it has that chronograph style but the extra 3 sets of counters for date, seconds and 24-hour are not too big as the usual chronograph-style watches.

Solvil El Titus Purple Strap Watch

And lastly, my days will not be complete without a few minutes session with my son’s baby feet! I know I’m only left with a short time to enjoy these before they turn into non-baby feet and before he gets old enough not to allow me to play with them…

I have more blessings to be thankful for and a few more favorite things. Sometimes, people, including me, tend to focus on the bad things that happen or those things that cause disappointments. But in life, I should learn how to count my blessings instead, those small things that make me smile or make my life wonderful, even for just a few minutes or seconds in a day. Hope you find your favorite things as well, no matter how big or small they are.
