Smarter and Happier Kids with BrainFit Studio Programs

Geniuses are not born…they are made.

brain-fitness-brainfit-sign-ecurve

I strongly believe that all children have the potential to achieve a lot of things and reach their dreams. And we, parents, must give them the support and encouragement to discover themselves and develop their skills. If there’s a slight chance that we can possibly increase their capabilities by 1 or 2 or 5 or 10%, wouldn’t we do whatever it takes?

Since my son started going to school at the age of 3, I’ve started spending 30 minutes to 1 hour daily to do exercise books with him. It was hard at first, of course, children want to play and play whenever they can. But I know that once this habit is fixed and with interesting books and tools, he will begin to find learning as a fun thing to do. It took a lot of patience, time and hard work but now, it’s already a daily habit and I can leave him alone to accomplish his books while I do other things, like write this article and share an experience with you about brain fitness.

brian-herbert-quote-on-learning-mother-child-photo

I’ve never heard of the term “brain fitness” before. I came across this concept during my quest for children’s activities last year. According to scientific research, we can improve our brain at whatever age we may be, much like how we can improve physical fitness.

An interesting brand I found was BrainFit. I saw their centre previously at The Curve shopping mall and the name itself already made me curious.

BrainFit aims to help children, including babies as young as 3 months up to 18 years old, unleash their intelligence and achieve their true potential. They work with neuro-scientists from the Scientific Learning Corporation to develop programs that children will benefit from.

A tool called CognitiveMAP™, BrainFit®’s proprietary neuroscientific tool, measures the brain fitness level of an individual. It helps trainers to understand each child’s unique brain fitness profile and to objectively measure improvement in cognitive skills after brain fitness training.

CognitiveMAP™ evaluates a student’s cognitive skills in the 5 brain fitness systems of:
1) Visual processing
2) Auditory processing
3) Sensory-Motor processing
4) Attention and Memory
5) Social-Emotional functioning

These 5 systems are important because they form the foundation of “engine for learning”. What you do is to schedule an appointment for your child to go through the CognitiveMAP evaluation. From this, a certified trainer will determine the most suitable program for your child to take.

Depending on the age of your child, BrainFit provides 3 key programs: BrainFit Baby (9 months to 3 years old), BrainFit Junior (3 to 6 years old) and BrainFit Scholar (6 to 18 years old)

My son is 6 years old, turning 7 this year, and he was suitable to proceed with BrainFit Scholar program. This program aims to give school-going children a learning advantage through “mental work-outs”. It comes with key mental muscle programs: SMART Moves, SMART Vision, SMART Listening and SMART Focus. All these are aimed at improving our children’s performance across various areas, from body and spatial awareness up to social skills. He started 2 weeks ago, 2 sessions of 60 minutes per week.

On his first session, my son was introduced to exercises that he’d never done before. He was thrilled to learn and do what the trainer taught him to do. Doing the exercises with other kids is also great as he learns how to be more social and comfortable with the tasks. I was actually nervous if he can stay focused for a stretch of 60 minutes in a new classroom. Surprisingly, with other children and with a patient trainer, he did.
The classrooms are clean, bright and organized.

Look, they have a room for “baby” training program!
brain-fitness-classroom-for-baby-and-kids

By the entrance, there’s a shelf display of educational toys for sale. Don’t be fooled; these are no ordinary toys  as these assist to develop logical  thinking. Each toy combines learning with fun!

kids-toys-for-logical-thinking-development

brain-fitness-kids-toys-for-brain-development

During his 2nd session, he went through similar exercises but a bit harder this time. He still enjoyed it and had fun with 2 other children in class. One of the fascinating exercises was this one where they had to write as skilfully as they can while the pen is vibrating continuously. Look at this!

If you want to help your child in developing his/her skills, preparing for their next stages and if you have budget for it, sending him/her to this program will provide numerous benefits for their growth.

Lego Nexo Knights Fantastical Realm at Your Fingertips

Multi-dimensional play? Sounds cool and fun!
Lego is always exploring and enabling newer and interesting ways for parents to enjoy uniquely curated experiences with their children. As a parent, I work hard to ensure that my child engages in different types of activities and have a diversified experience, whether it’s something creative, educational or simply fun. It’s great to see that LEGO recognizes this need for children and parents. And they have recently launched this amazing multi-platform product line, the LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS.
This one is entirely new and different from other Lego collections. The LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS enables children and Lego fans to enjoy both online and offline realms while training to be the best knights of Knighton.

lego-nexo-knights-toys-beast-master-and-cards
I love the concept of multi-dimensional play. This combines the physical world with the digital, allowing all of us to immerse ourselves not just in 1 platform but also across different channels or media. Gone are the days that we only enjoy the LEGO toys that we build. With LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS, we enjoy an app (Merlok 2.0) with a virtual school (the NEXO Academy website) with animated TV series (via Cartoon Network) with comics and with the LEGO building sets. All these platforms work together to give our kids the best multi-dimensional experience that we’ve never had before! Now, LEGO is truly not just a toy…it has gone above and beyond what a toy does!
lego-nexo-knights-merlok-game

The Merlok 2.0 app is a fun game to play. My son had downloaded the game right after testing it at the Battle Zone in MidValley. This app has a special ability to scan and download as many as 170 unique NEXO Knights powers, represented as knight shields, scattered across the kingdom of Knighton.
So let’s get started with our training! It’s very easy to join the LEGO® NEXOKNIGHTS Academy.

lego-nexo-knights-academy-online
Step 2: Activate your or your child’s Lego ID from the Activation Email sent to your email address.

Step 3: Log-in to your account and download the app.

Step 4: Start with your training and accomplish Quests! Scan shields from print ads, cards and everywhere you see Nexo Knights shields, including the TV series! Drop by MidValley Center Court until 20th March 2016 and discover a lot of scattered shields within the event area!

The Academy gives you access to a lot of information such as the Nexo Knights, products, videos, latest news, events and more. My son has started his training with the Nexo Knights Academy. It’s fun and easy! Just start with a quest and every successful step earns you a shield that you can immediately scan. This is also saved in the armory and can be scanned later. You can even edit your profile with different pieces of Lego figure!

lego-nexo-knights-building-set
Of course, my son’s LEGO® NEXO KNIGHTS multi-dimensional play won’t be complete without building the Lego set. He was thrilled to fix his first Nexo Knights toys: Ultimate Robin figure that comes with full armor and 2 pieces of chicken drumstick (haha!), and Beast Master’s Chaos Chariot that comes with Nexo Knight Macy. It’s cool that this new Lego line has added a female character in the team. Macy is the princess of the realm and dedicated to protect Knighton even when it’s tough for her to prove herself to her father, the king. See, I’ve been absorbed by the story already.

This LEGO experience is one of the highlights of my son’s school holiday. I wish you and your family a happy and “play-full” season! Drop by MidValley Megamall soon, download the Merlok 2.0 app, join the Nexo Knights Academy, build a LEGO set and have fun!

Power Up with Lego Nexo Knights at MidValley

lego-nexo-knight-power-up-shield
Yay, Lego! Yes, that’s the voice in my head screaming in excitement. When I saw the Lego Nexo Knights display set-up at the Centre Court in MidValley, I just knew I have to bring my son as soon as the school holiday starts.

lego-nexo-knight-event-midvalley
The Lego® Nexo Knights is the latest and newest product line from Lego Malaysia. My son first knew about this new LEGO® line through Cartoon Network and he loves it. He even records the shows from Astro and watches them after school or after doing his homework. Children and adults alike can easily be captivated by the story as this combines a futuristic, high-tech world with the classical theme of knighthood where there are heroic knights, a kingdom, princess, king, queen and, of course, an evil army to conquer.

having-fun-with-lego-nexo-knights
Making this school holiday even more exciting for children, Lego® has brought the Nexo Knights experience to life at MidValley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur. As someone who resides in this beautiful country, I’m proud to say that Malaysia was the first to host the Lego Nexo Knights event in Southeast Asia!
This is the perfect time to bring the kids to MidValley and allow them to explore various activities by Lego Nexo Knights. From now until 20th March 2016, every day is packed with a “training schedule” where our children can have a fun time undergoing the Knight training process. These activities are free for you and your kids to experience.
Here’s the Weekday Training Schedule:

Just share a picture of your Lego Nexo Knights experience and add the hashtag #LEGONEXOKNIGHTS and you can redeem the print instantly at the Power Up Zone. At The Power Up Zone, kids can enjoy a life-size game where they will “power up to be a Nexo Knight” by physically holding a shield and a sword to engage and battle with enemies on a TV screen. Isn’t this cool? My son enjoyed this a lot and made him feel like a real knight in battle!
lego-nexo-knights-power-up-game-play
At the Battle Zone, this is at the Centre Court where all the Lego models are in display, Lego has several activities lined up for the little ones and even adults. There’s a showcase of tablets where everyone can play the Merlok 2.0, a free-to-download app available at the AppStore and GooglePlay, then battle as a Nexo Knight and fight the evil forces of Jestro. This cool app has an amazing feature where you can scan knight shields to use them as powers within the game. There are as many as 170 unique NEXO Knights powers that can be found in physical and digital forms, in building sets, print ads, books, comics and even from the TV series. (I will share more details and guide for this amazing app and the NEXO Academy in my next post, this is really exciting! I wanna play!)

At the Battle Zone, you’ll also have access to the Virtual Lego Nexo Knights Battle Tour where you get a close-up look into the fantastical world of Knighton, as an apprentice in training for the Lego Nexo Knights academy.
The Forge Zone allows kids to play mini-models and have fun learning to build Lego figures with simple steps. It’s fun to see children having a great time building something. I believe that this kind of activity fosters imaginative and creative skills among our children.
The Lego Nexo Knight mascot also appears in the afternoon, bringing much delight to everyone. Here are the happy children at the event together with Clay Morrington and the fun team of Lego!

Functional Laptop Bag at Flight 001

For the past 2 months, I’ve been looking for a functional laptop messenger bag but I didn’t want a traditional one, not the black conventional polyester type that comes free with a purchase of a laptop. I was looking for something out of the usual-looking ones, must have a pocket/sleeve for a MacBook, must have enough space for me to bring my makeup kit, wallet and other small items. Sadly, it is not that easy to find one. It’s quite surprising that with so many bag-makers around in this century, very few brands have been thinking about working women like me who need to combine a bit of style with technology and essential items inside 1 bag. I’m not asking for designer style laptop bag, just something out of the ordinary.
But yay, finally! I stumbled upon Flight 001 at e@Curve 2 weeks ago and I saw this nice, gray messenger bag!

Material:
Felt / Vegan Leather
95% Syn Felt

I love the look and feel of this laptop bag. It’s definitely not the usual type of material, and it uses vegan material by the way. It has a detachable shoulder strap; you can hold it like a business case if preferred. It’s also sturdy and structured, which means you can place documents inside without getting them crumpled.

laptop-messenger-bag-flight-001-men-and-women
There’s a quick access back pocket for items like business cardholder and even your phone. I normally tuck my iPhone 6 here so I can easily take it out.

The main compartment has speed-release buckles, one of which features the brand M.R.K.T. in rubber.

It includes a removable sleeve that fits my 13.3 MacBook Air. If I need to bring a tablet, this sleeve also serves as a divider between devices. Cool and functional.

laptop-messenger-bag-flight-001-men-and-women
See how it snugly hugs a MacBook inside. I’m sure that even an ordinary laptop can fit nicely here, without making the bag bulky.
The best part is it can accommodate my other essential items: make-up kit, wallet, sets of keys, wet tissues, sanitary pads…I love this bag!

If you are looking for unconventional but functional laptop bags and other travel essentials, you can drop by Flight 001 in e@Curve or at Bangsar Village 2. They have brands like Hedgren, Timbuk2, Herschel and more.

An exciting part of this free flow wine tasting includes NEW ARRIVAL WINES from Australia — the Printhie wines. Printhie is a 5-Star rated winery from the high-altitude, cool-climate Orange region of NSW, Australia. I’m a big fan of Pinot Gris and I’m so excited to be one of the first few people who gets to taste the Printhie‘Mountain Range’ Pinot Gris in Malaysia. According to Wine Talk sommelier, this is a classic Pinot Gris, with moderate aromatic fruit intensity typical of Pinot Gris, with citrus, pear and peach fruit. The palate shows evidence of lees stirring in creamy mid-palate texture, with luscious honeysuckle flavours balanced and a great acidity, making it an addictive white wine, very aromatic and friendly.

And to even make this wine tasting more fun and irresistible (as if the free flow of 12 wines aren’t enough), wines will be served with yummy, mouth-watering canapés by Spitalfield’s Gastrobar. Spitalfield’s has recently opened at the Concourse Level of the newly-renovated Atria Shopping Gallery in Damansara Jaya. It is a British-inspired bar that serves great cuisines which range from pasta to pizza to other delicious dishes with its unique theme.

Wine Talk Hosts First Winemaker Tasting Session featuring Bertrand Sourdais

How often do you meet a winemaker in Malaysia? Wine Talk does it again…an enjoyable evening of wines plus an exclusive preview of new ones from France and Spain for its customers and Wine Club members.

wine_talk_malaysia_tasting_event_with_french_winemaker

It is a rare event for a wine lover in this part of the world to meet the winemakers themselves. If you were in Germany, Australia, France, Spain or maybe Italy, you’d have good chances of meeting the talented men and women behind the art of winemaking process. But here in Malaysia, it would be a memorable occasion to enjoy a wine tasting session with the winemaker himself.
On 18th April 2015, Wine Talk, headed by its CEO and sommelier David Stephan, hosted an indulgent session of wine tasting and Spanish tapas at La Bodega Lounge in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. The tasting session featured 4 different wines from reputable winemaker, Bertrand Sourdais, who flew in to Malaysia that day for Wine Talk’s first winemaker tasting session this year.

wine_talk_malaysia_tasting_event_with_french_winemaker

Bertrand Sourdais talking about Chinon wines

Freshly landing an hour before the event started at 4pm, Sourdais was a breath of excitement and enthusiasm as he entered the cozy lounge of La Bodega. And the moment he started talking, one can immediately feel his passion for wines and the meticulous work involved in his winemaking process.

Sourdais guided guests through 4 wines, which were all products of his lifelong passion for wines: Chinon ‘Les Messanges De Pallus’, Chinon ‘Les Pensees De Pallus’, Chinon ‘Le Grand Vin de Pallus’ and Bodegas Antidoto. The first 2 are already available in Malaysia, exclusively at Wine Talk, while the latter 2 wines are expected to arrive in June/ July. Sourdais’s Chinon wines are from France while the last one, the Antidoto, is from Spain.

4 wines tasted during the wine tasting session with Bertrand Sourdais

Bertrand became the 5th generation of the Sourdais Family to manage the estate when he took over in 2004. They are based in the village of Cravant-Les-Côteaux, one of the 2 villages encompassing the Chinon AOC, which produces mostly red wine, Cabernet Franc being the King Grape of the region. Since he took over, he has been slowly converting the estate towards a fully organic approach, and working parcel per parcel (some planted in sand, others in limestone) to make a more drastic selection for the 3 different cuvees. He does this to produce extremely refined and complex wines, which are friendly to drink now but can also withstand some ageing.

Passionate about offering the purest expression of the grapes only, Bertrand works with a very respectful and minimalist approach, growing grapes with an organic method, combined with slow and careful oak ageing.
As a grand traveler and lover of Spanish wines, Bertrand has also been making wines in Spain since the late 90’s, first managing the now highly-renowned Dominio de Atauta, and during this event introduced Bodegas Antidoto. Wine Talk customers and Wine Club members were the first ones to enjoy a glass of this much-awaited wine, together with Chinon ‘Le Grand Vin de Pallus’, which are both arriving in 2-3 months in Malaysia.

4 Wines by Bertrand Sourdais:
Aged in concrete tanks and stainless steel for over 6 months, the grapes come mostly from vines planted in sandy soils – Dark berry and fruity notes combined with capsicum, mild spice and herbal qualities, make this a great value wine – dry and addictive! Perfect with a wide selection of meat dishes, better served slightly chilled. Les Messanges is a pure expression of the Cabernet Franc: dry, fruitful & very friendly.
‘Les Pensées’ (name of a flower which is very present around the vineyards) is the Domaine Trademark-cuvée. It is the one that put them on the World Wine Map a few years ago, getting top-scores everywhere. Sourced from parcels surrounding the estate, planted dominantly on sand-limestone hillsides and pebbly sand parcels, the wine is oak-aged for over 12 months and a further 6 months in tanks.
This is a beautiful bold dry red with great depth, richness to the layers of capsicum, plum, black cherry and redcurrant fruit, accented by notes of bouncy pepper, savory and olive. Perfect with a nice grilled steak!
Coming soon, exclusively available in Malaysia via Wine Talk at www.winetalk.com.my
Sourdais set aside the fruit of his oldest vines to produce just 100 cases of this very special grand vin. Named Grand Vin de Pallus, this wine is a pure expression not only of a blessed terroir and a historic vintage, but also of  Sourdais’ talent and his persistent passion to create a Chinon for the ages. This wine bursts with the essence of violets, combining rich black currant fruit with a bracing fraîcheur (this is a French word meaning freshness or coolness). As one of the guests described, this Chinon has an amazing flavor that “dances around inside your mouth”.  Sounds appetizing.
This Spanish wine is organically made from old Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) vines. Extractions are kept under control and second- and third year 225-litre barriques are used in order to limit oak influence. It combines 70% of old vines with younger vines, bringing a lively touch to the wine, resulting to fruit flavours of red berries, floral reminiscences, a racy acidity and considerable minerality while remaining juicy and dense on the palate.
Bodegas Antídoto is a project designed by Bertrand Sourdais with David Hernando, an agricultural engineer and a former technical director of the winery Atalayas de Golbán, where he worked from 2004 to 2010.  Their objective is to produce fine, unique wines in the Eastern part of the Ribera del Duero region. Antídoto is a youthful project that started in 2009. Though it was not until 2011, the year in which the first Antídoto was made using grapes from the vineyards that they run in Soria, that the project truly gained momentum.

Guests had a great time with Bertrand Sourdais, David Stephan and the rest of the Wine Talk team. Aside from the beautiful wines and Spanish tapas, they also enjoyed special prices to buy or pre-book any of the wines they liked that day.
To the surprise of guests, David Stephan had a lucky draw at the end of the session and gave away a beautiful magic decanter. Sounds interesting? The magic decanter speeds up the process of traditional decanting, which normally takes half an hour or more, by decanting the wine immediately as the wine is poured through. And a lucky guest bagged the prize.

What I think about that Watsons Video Ad

I’ve read mixed reactions on this recent advert by Watsons. What do I think?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5ytoPaBFy4
(Click image to watch full video)
I’ve been so busy these past few weeks and I barely have time nowadays to blog (I’m way behind my lineup of articles, gasp!). Well, work and family come first.
But today, I noticed a lot of mixed reactions regarding this Watsons video advertisement, an ad meant to announce its ‘Hottest Sale’ ever.

Watsons Hottest Sale Ever Video
It’s a simple, short video featuring a girl, with her boyfriend, shopping for things at Watsons then the girl, who looks pretty wearing makeup, says to the cashier that she doesn’t want to buy cosmetics. After which, her face turns plain, pale, colorless while her boyfriend gets shocked and panics a bit.

The cashier insists that she will get huge discounts and places back the cosmetic items in the girl’s pile of products and the girl turns pretty again. The girl says that she still doesn’t want to buy cosmetics, removes the makeup items and she turns pale again. Her boyfriend panics a bit more. Then the cashier insists that with Watsons VIP card, she gets RM5 points. The girl’s boyfriend then grabs her wallet, takes out the VIP card and says that he wants.

I’ve read some of the comments here and there, and it’s a bit confusing. Take note that I am not here to create any form of war against other people’s opinions. I’m just sharing thoughts and some questions.
Some people are appalled, saying that the advert means that women need makeup to be beautiful. To this I ask, isn’t this something that has already consumed the market? I mean, with all the hype and addiction of women to makeup, with all the selfies posted daily and hourly enhanced with pre-shoot makeup and post-shoot filters, with all the beauty bloggers including me who are blogging about makeup, with all the magazines in the world advertising cosmetics, are we saying that using makeup to be beautiful is a damnable statement and those who promote it should be condemned? I guess there are so many makeup brands that we have to condemn if that’s the case.

How many of us would actually go out, meet friends, go to work, go out on a date or important event, without, take note, withouta dab of makeup? Would anyone of us actually dare to spend a month, a week or even a day of meeting people outside the house without even a pat of face powder, lipstick or lipgloss, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara or blush? None of any of these? Nothing at all? Just wash your face and out you go? Hmmm, sounds pretty impossible to me.
Some get angry, saying that their boyfriends would never react like that. Well, to this, I’d say that the ad did some exaggeration but it could happen in real life. Come on, let’s be realistic here. Nowadays, you see teens and ladies in the mall trying to look like Korean actresses with all the possible makeup, large or colored contact lens, fake eyelashes and more. Of course, with all the enhancements, some ladies would now look entirely different than how they normally would.

So if a boyfriend has never seen a girl without the extreme add-ons, add-ons that she did to herself, and then suddenly he sees her for the first time without them, can we blame him if he looks at her differently? If he continues to love her or even more, then all is good. But if not, then it simply meant that his love was superficial. However, in the ad, the portrayal was not like this. In fact, the boyfriend in the ad was supportive of the girl. He didn’t scream or ran when he saw her without makeup. But let’s remember something here. If we have trained our boyfriends or partners to see us in our enhanced looks, then we have created that picture in their heads. It is not their fault that they expect you to look like a queen when you’ve always shown them that you look like a queen.
Some find it funny. Personally, this ad reminded me of an episode in Ally McBeal where Ling Woo (played by Lucy Liu) was not wearing makeup and when her boyfriend Richard Fish (played by Greg Germann) saw her for the first time without makeup, he screamed in fear. Or that episode in That 70’s show when Michael (Ashton Kutcher) sees Jackie (Mila Kunis) without makeup. His scream was epic. Check it out in this video. Super funny.

So if I were the brand director, would I approve this ad or conceptualize the ad this way? Yes and no. Yes, it is good to have a funny approach. This is probably one of the funniest sale ads I’ve seen. We normally see sale ads done in the repeated boring ways and this one gets a plus for extra effort. But no, I agree with some who say that there could have been a more tasteful way of announcing the SALE event or highlighting on makeup products.
But overall, do I find it offensive? Should it be a reason for me to jump and condemn the brand?
No. And honestly, I just find the ad hilarious.
