Get Ready for the Holidays with Benefit Cosmetics!

benefit-cosmetics-holiday-look

‘Tis the season to be jolly…and fabulous! For the month of December, I’m sure we all have several events to attend to. There are annual dinners, Christmas parties, holiday dinners and probably weddings. I, for one, have 3 events to prepare for: our company annual dinner tomorrow, family dinner next weekend and a birthday party plus dinner on Christmas day. Parties everywhere. Are you prepared?
Aside from the presents to shop for and the attire to wear, don’t forget to have THE LOOK! Ever since I stepped into College/ University, I always make sure that my face is part of my presentation. At 16, I’m already wearing eyeliner and lipstick as part of my college look. I probably started with eye shadows at a later age of 21 but, hey, not a bad age to start learning makeup!
I’m not really the type who follows color makeup trends and sticks to those colors for my look. I love smoky eyes, neutrals, purples, greens, blues and metallic hues. But one thing is for sure; I must always blend solid black on my eye makeup. Call it boring or typical but I particularly blend black to have a darker, bigger eyes effect.
And what about this holiday season? I’m not recommending particular colors or a specific look but I’m sharing some tips to be gorgeous for the holidays (and for other occasions)!
HOW TO LOOK GORGEOUS FOR THE HOLIDAYS (AND BEYOND):
Tip No. 1 – Get your brows trimmed or waxed by experts!
We sometimes overlook the impact of having nicely-shaped eyebrows. I myself am guilty of forgetting my eyebrows. It seems minimal but those 2 lines of hairs adorn our eyes. When not properly cared for, there will be stray hairs around and it messes up the way you look. Overly thick eyebrows can also look quite messy. Inappropriate shape can totally change your look in a not very nice way.

Benefit Cosmetics Brow Bar ready to serve you!

Benefit Cosmetics has been famous for its Brow Service. Even if your eyebrows were as hairy as a gorilla, their experts would know what to do. You just need to proceed to this cute Brow Bar and Benefit’s expert will be working on those hairs! For a reasonable cost of RM42 (brow waxing) or RM45 (brow tweezing), you can have gorgeous brows in no time.
On the Brow Bar table, I noticed this cute booklet, which shows every step of the Brow Service, before and after look. I didn’t realize that there are more than 30 steps to get those perfect eyebrows!

Tip No. 2: Prep your face with the right skincare products.
This should actually be a daily routine to follow for years but I’m writing it here as a reminder. Even if we can have the best makeup available, nothing beats a good canvas to put makeup on…your skin. Cleanse, tone, moisturize are just the basic steps in taking care of our face. Breakouts, pimples, discolorations, wrinkles and fine lines at a younger age can damage the way you look.

Benefit Cosmetics has a good skincare selection ranging from cleansers, to eye creams, to moisturizers and more. Recently, it has been raining quite frequently and temperature in the office can be quite cold, which can make our skin dry and dehydrated. You can check out Benefit’s Total Moisture Facial Cream and other skincare products to take care of your skin. Don’t forget your eye cream!

Tip No. 3: Get a good makeup primer.
Even if you have beautiful skin, it’s great to apply a primer for longer-lasting makeup and conceal some imperfections, too. Benefit’s That Gal, which is one of their best sellers, is a silky pink primer that takes your complexion from dull to darling! Simply blend it on for the look of brighter, smoother skin. Contains light-reflecting pigments to help brighten all skin tones and raspberry & chamomile to soothe skin. Priced at RM115.

I am personally in love with POREfessional, a Benefit best seller, as it conceals my huge pores nicely and evenly. You can quickly minimize the appearance of pores & fine lines for smoother-than-smooth skin! Just apply this silky, lightweight balm alone, under or over makeup. Translucent, oil-free formula complements all skintones and helps makeup stay put. Contains a Vitamin E derivative, known to protect skin from free radicals. Priced at RM115.

And do you have problems with eye shadows that don’t stay in place? Creating that unsightly line on your eyelids? Check out Stay Don’t Stray Eye Makeup Primer. A real must-have to combat messy eye shadows, especially for those with oily skin like me.

Tip No. 4: Get a good foundation.
I’m someone who will not get out of the house without applying foundation, except when I’m asked to, like when I attended the Benefit Beauty Bash last Sunday. Although I work hard in having healthy skin, I was not blessed with pore-less face and quite the opposite. My nose, forehead, chin and cheek areas have very visible pores. If those are pockets, I probably don’t need to bring a bag everyday!
Kidding aside, applying good foundation, even on beautiful skin, has its benefit. It creates a luminous, flawless look, making you even more stunning and photo-ready, too!

Benefit HELLO Flawless Oxygen Wow

HELLO Flawless Oxygen Wow! by Benefit is a great item to complete your makeup routine. It’s a brightening makeup available in different shades, also contains SPF25, making you sun-protected. And it’s only RM135!
Tip No. 5: Be armed with a good eye makeup set!
The eyes particularly need more attention and items, as these are the windows of our souls! To have a fabulous look for the holidays, arm yourself with good eye shadow colors, at least a black eyeliner, and the right makeup brushes.
Benefit Cosmetics has eye makeup kits that can be a girl’s best friend. It’s very easy to choose as the colors come in lovely combinations. Take this Big Beautiful Eyes set for starters!

I’m not a big fan of mascaras because I often experience smudges but this one’s sure to catch your attention. Now, I am thinking about including mascara in my makeup routine.

Tip No. 6: Have kissable lips!
This one’s pretty easy and simple for everyone. I’m sure most of us have several colors of lipsticks and several lip balms, too. Don’t forget to complete your look with a nice lip color or lip gloss. If you like multi-functional products, you’ll love  Benefit Lollitint!

And lastly, Tip No. 7: Smell amazingly good.
Take your fabulous look to the next level; make your impact stand out and unforgettable by even smelling good! I never noticed this before but Benefit has a lovely collection of EDTs (eau de toilette). I sampled a few and they smell damn great. So add 1 or 2 to your collection and spray some fragrance before your dinner. You’ll be surprised at how much good vibes you’ll get!
Check out this beautiful set of 4 Benefit fragrances. Perfect as a gift and perfect for the season!

My Machines Service Centre Experience

macbook-pro

I’ve wanted to send my MacBook Pro to the Machines Service Center since last year but somehow I just never got to do it until 2 weeks ago. I purchased my MacBook in December 2011 and I think it deserves some ‘check-up’ or whatever. There’s nothing wrong really; in fact, I’m in love with this Mac very much. Fast, efficient and reliable.
But I guess all gadgets encounter some weakness or glitch somewhere. I enjoy editing photos and since I’ve taken blogging more seriously early this year, I’ve been using a photo editor program more frequently than before. When I got my MacBook, I purchased this editor program from iTunes called Pixelmator. Well, yeah, Photoshop would have been the best choice but I find it too expensive for my personal use. I’m not a graphic designer or professional photographer so I needed something not so expensive. Anyway, I am satisfied with the features of Pixelmator, which are comparable to Photoshop, but there are a few occasions when it suddenly exits the program without warning. It never happens in my other programs but I might have been ignoring the prompts to update the software. However, when I tried to update Pixelmator, I was prompted to update my Mac software first. I tried updating the Mac software but it was never completed so I knew I needed professional assistance from Mac.
And so one sunny morning, I drove to Mid Valley and walked to Northpoint Offices where a Machines Service Centre is located. It is quite easy to locate at the Ground Floor of Block B, Northpoint Offices, as it is brightly lit and it has see-through glass walls.
Machines has a pretty cool queuing system. Upon entry, you’ll be welcomed by iPads where you will type your name and you’ll get a virtual queue number.
machines-service-centre-ipad
machines-service-centre-comment-box

I also can’t help but notice these cute feedback or comments boxes by the wall. I find it simple but innovative and proactive in trying to get feedback from customers. Don’t you find a lot of other feedback boxes boring and traditional in a form of drop box with a phrase ‘comments/suggestions’ printed on it? And normally it is hidden somewhere, in a corner or an unnoticeable place? Machines feedback boxes look fun and they were very visible to visitors. And notice that they have 3 facial expressions that tell you they’re open to happy, sad and very sad feedback. Now, this is what I call ‘asking for feedback’.

machines-service-centre
There were more than 10 customers inside the centre when I arrived. But I was quite surprised of the fast service. I was number 15 but it only took me 8 minutes to wait. The service guys were fast and I saw that customers walk out with their concerns settled.

machines-service-centre
See, number 14 and me being served at the same time.
I told the Machines IT staff about my concern and he immediately proceeded to updating my Mac software.
One of the things I appreciated about this visit to Machines was that I didn’t have to go through any checking of my details, no need to dig info about when or where did I buy my Mac, no nitty-gritty inquiries. They just quickly solve my Mac problem.
My baby getting his dose of updated Mac software…
machines-service-centre

machines-service-centre
In a short while, the service center was deserted and quiet except for me and another guest. I was left behind because the software update has 4GB worth of data to download. No wonder I wasn’t able to do it myself. I guess my Internet at home wasn’t good enough.

machines-service-centre
Check out the comfy chairs at Machines. Isn’t it wonderful to find a waiting area like this? I’ve been to a few customer service outlets including big players in other industries such as telecommunications. And so far (and I’m sure you’ve also noticed), most of them do not provide comfy chairs. They would have a few lounge chairs, sometimes without back support so it can be tiring to wait, especially when the service takes long.

machines-service-centre
Machines also has a coffee machine for guests to have while waiting. Drinking water is also available.

machines-service-centre
In front of the service team, there are a lot of stools for guests being served. Again, I think this is very good as it shows they welcome guests with friends or relatives who accompany them to visit. Comparing it to other brands, Machines does a great job in making people comfortable and welcome. This is something you won’t easily find in other technology-related industries.

machines-service-centre
Oooh, and during my visit, they were having clearance sale for iPad 2 covers. Check out the eye-popping colors! And these are only at RM20 from normal price of RM109.
My software update was completed and I was happy to go back home with a more efficient MacBook. I’ve already updated my Pixelmator, which is now even better than before. No more sudden program exits.
I am thankful to the Machines team at Northpoint Offices. They were very efficient and helpful.
To sum it up, why did I enjoy my first visit to Machines Service Centre:
  • Cool queuing system via iPad and virtual number – no need to hold paper with number
  • Comfortable waiting chairs
  • Drinks available for everyone
  • Short waiting time
  • No long inquiries
  • Fast and efficient service
  • Problem solved

Visit Pavilion and admire the Stars of Christmas display!

christmas-red-ball

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This is the season when all shopping malls will be showcasing their creative and heartwarming display for Christmas. And through the years, Pavilion KL keeps surprising us with their amazing concepts. This is probably one of the reasons why customers turn into immediate shutterbugs when they visit Pavilion.
From the entrance facing Bukit Bintang (to tourists, this entrance is coming from Starhill Gallery/ Sephora side), you can immediately see tall white Christmas trees with the tallest green tree in the middle. The tallest one is sitting on top of a gazebo labeled with Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Inside, a beautiful display in white theme adorns the lobby of the mall. Polar bears with red ties are just irresistible to mall-goers. You’ll find it hard to find this space free of people taking pictures.

Behind this center display are fragrance collections that are perfect for holiday gift shopping. You’ll find popular brands such as Bulgari, Jimmy Choo, Calvin Klein, Paco Rabanne, Narciso Rodriguez, Carolina Herrera, Anna Sui and more.  For loved ones who enjoy perfumes and body care products from designer brands, these holiday sets are great gifts. I’ll share more about these sets in my upcoming posts.

I never thought that reindeer can be dressed up white and silver accessories. This one is simply creative and glamorous.

Now, we get to the concourse where a lot of people spend more time taking pictures. At the center is a beautiful display of a white, brightly lit Christmas tree and a house surrounded by snow trees and white reindeer.

This house is quite popular among the visitors. So I had to wait before I got my chance to take a clear photo.

You’ll also find this wonderful carousel that fits the theme perfectly. Kids and their parents queue up to have a ride and take pictures (of course!).

School holidays are here and it’s a fun idea to drop by Pavilion with (or without) the kids. My son still has school until end of the month so I can only bring him during weekends.
My favorite time of the year is surely an excellent time to see wonderful Christmas theme displays. Pavilion KL never fails me every season. I’m already excited for next year’s display!
So to all, Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

Sunshine September for Autism Awareness at Suria KLCC

“We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” – Mother Teresa

Last Saturday, I found myself wandering around the lovely grounds of Suria KLCC. This place never fails to give me a feeling of thankfulness to have the ability to appreciate its grandeur. Maybe to some Malaysians, this is just an ordinary view, a simple building in this part of Kuala Lumpur. But to me, this place signifies magnificence, an enduring evidence of what this country has accomplished through the years.

Yes, it truly is a blessing to behold such beauty. But in this life and at this very moment, there are people who are less fortunate, children who are fighting for their lives and for their dreams. Suria KLCC, together with other companies, has put together an event to help these children — Sunshine September for Autism Awareness.

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills, typically appears within the first 3 years of life. It currently affects the lives and families of 1 in 600 Malaysian children. It is associated with rigid routines or repetitive behaviors such as obsessively following schedules or playing certain toys in a monotonous manner, etc. It is a spectrum disorder, variable in severity and in symptoms across individuals. It makes life hard and difficult for autistic patients and their families, health care providers and their teachers.

In Malaysia, persons with autism are referred to NASOM (National Autism Society of Malaysia) by government hospitals and private practitioners. NASOM has experienced a 30% increase in their intake for the past 3 years. Yet the waiting list gets longer each day.

I urge everyone to visit the Concourse Level in Suria KLCC and extend support to NASOM. There are so many children out there who need help, even a small effort can go a long way. There’s a big setup of Sunshine September with several booths where we can extend whatever support we can. At the HerWorld booth, for example,  simply purchase an October issue and you will also get a 250ml The Body Shop gentle eye makeup remover.

There is also a memory game booth where you can win a gift.

This booth offers Sunshine September memorabilia at very affordable prices. There are thumb drives, T-shirts, garment bags and more.

Look at this purple plush toy, very adorable at only RM20.

There are also some paintings for sale. Gorgeous ones, really nice for home decor.

There are a lot of participating outlets within Suria KLCC who are contributing proceeds to NASOM this September. For a complete list of stores, you can check out the purple booklet distributed within the concourse level.

Let’s share some love, everyone. Visit the concourse level at Suria KLCC. And if it’s already too late by the time you stumbled upon this blog, please call +603 2382 2828 or www.suriaklcc.com.my to inquire how you can support NASOM and help autistic children.

Alternatively, you can directly contact NASOM at +603 7886 8233 or visit www.nasom.com.my

Absolute Thai – Great Thai cuisine

My son and I would sometimes go with my husband to The Curve and go walking around the entire afternoon until evening. As usual, my son would be looking for a toy to buy which would take hours of walking for me while I push him on his stroller.

Dinner is either buying from restaurants outside The Curve and when I have cravings for something inside this mall, my husband would take us to eat dinner there. One time, I wanted to have some Thai food and he brought us to Absolute Thai at Ikano Power Centre (IPC).

Friends might find it surprising to see me eating spicy food but there was something about Thai tom yum that really got me hooked. I ordered tom yum soup with prawns and my dessert, mango with sticky rice! Must always have this dessert at Thai restaurants! I’m not really the type who likes to order so many varieties so these are enough for me. For my son, we ordered Japanese bean curd and minced chicken soup. No worries, his soup was not spicy at all, we double confirmed.

My Thai tom yum soup…hot and spicy but delicious for me…

Absolute Thai tom yum soup with prawns

My mango with sticky rice (or what’s left of it when I remembered to take photo)…

Absolute Thai mango with sticky rice

My hubby ordered some noodle and fried chicken…

It’s great that their ‘placemat’ is the menu itself so you can quickly see and choose from their menu. Don’t you just hate it when you have to ask and wait for the menu before you can start choosing what to eat?

Absolute Thai – The Thai Tribune – FRONT page menu

Absolute Thai restaurant has an outdoor area where people can smoke but it’s also a nice location to have a view of The Curve. At night, the air is breezy and cool, of course, you wouldn’t want to be outside when it’s raining but it’s quite nice on a normal evening.

I had a delicious dinner at Absolute Thai and I will surely come back for my tom yum here!

Love cigar and whiskey? You gotta visit Whisky Tango Foxtrot!

My work-related adventures have brought me to one of the coolest places in Kuala Lumpur. Located at Jalan Kasah Damansara Heights, Whisky Tango Foxtrot is definitely a must-visit for those who enjoy cigars and/or whiskey.

Upon entering the venue, you will be welcomed by a huge humidor showcasing a big collection of cigars and accessories. It is the biggest collection showcase in Asia, I was told. I’ve never seen a cigar collection in my life and I find this amazing. Honestly, I only see people smoking cigars in movies, those typical high-profile men who enjoy the most luxurious lifestyle. I am inclined to believe that only people who have reached a certain level of success or wealth can truly appreciate cigars. But as I’ve learned, there are a lot of people who enjoy having cigars once in a while, not just the extremely wealthy. I guess it’s a similar general perception as with wines. People tend to think that wines are also for the rich.

There are shelves and shelves of cigars. Some are sold in box sets but there are also individual ones. There are also very nice sets that are great gifts.

Cigar collection at Whisky Tango Foxtrot

Cigar collection at Whisky Tango Foxtrot

Highlighted in display were Macanudo cigars.

I didn’t know cigars are also aged. This set is aged for 8 years…

You’ll also find great accessories for cigar lovers such as lighters, cigar scissors, cutters, cigar cases and more.

Cigar accessories

Lovely lighters…

High-quality cutters and scissors…

They also have an online store where you can easily purchase your favorite cigars.

The humidor/ entrance has this poster to welcome guests. I did a bit of research and as I found out, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ was a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939, a few months before the beginning of the Second World War. It aimed to raise the morale of the British public in the event of wartime disaster. You’ll actually see a lot of different phrases or statements using this concept around, whether in mall boutiques, mugs, tumblers, shirts and other things. In fact, this is almost everywhere nowadays. But there’s a much more meaningful origin to this quote.

After the humidor, you will reach the cozy, private lounge. It is adorned with black-and-white  posters, black leather chairs and dim lighting. The atmosphere is very masculine and  exclusive. Definitely a great place to hangout, enjoy cigars and whiskey while having serious or not-so-serious discussions. I can imagine my husband having whiskey here with his friends.

On one side of the lounge, a wall of private humidors are lined up for members who want to store their cigar collections. For a certain fee, a member will enjoy a private humidor with his/her initials, 10% discount on all purchases and other exclusive privileges.

At one end is the bar where you can enjoy your favorite whiskey, wines and some cocktails. I’m not a whiskey drinker but since they also serve my cocktails then it’s great for me…

There are also 2 private rooms for guests or members who would prefer to have a more private area.

I have great respect for places that pay good attention in making their washroom better than just its function. And I’d say WTF (that’s Whisky Tango Foxtrot, no pun intended) impressed me. I’ve never seen any bar or restaurant using a great product such as Aesop Aromatique for a hand wash. (Well, the ex-skincare brand manager in me can’t help but notice…)

And aside from that, there is also a set of Ralph Lauren perfumes for guests to use. How impressive.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot is definitely THE place for cigar and whiskey aficionados. The service is damn good, the cigar showcase is the biggest in the country (and in Asia), and the ambience is something you won’t get anywhere else. It’s great for anyone who wants to enjoy and have a good time while having some puffs and drinks. Though I’m not a cigar or whiskey fan, I agree that this is a great place to hangout or spend an evening with friends.

WTF is located at 2nd floor, 128B Jalan Kasah, Damansara Heights, KL, Malaysia.

Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant

While working for a previous company, my office was located next to Mid Valley Megamall but I only ate at Brotzeit just once with a colleague. The food was great but it wasn’t a regular option for me and friends to go to for lunch. Aside from the price concern of most employees for daily meal spending, I guess Western food is not really a top choice for a lot of locals. I, on the other hand, am a fan of good Western food.

Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant, Mid Valley Megamall

Last weekend, the early celebration of my sister-in-law’s birthday brought me back to Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant. I never noticed their entire menu before. There’s an appetizing selection of different dishes and pastas. Most of all, they had cocktails and a decent wine selection.

On the first page of their menu, there’s a brief introduction about Brotzeit. I find this good and interesting. I’m not sure if there are other people like me who’d really read it but it’s great to see that they put some effort to explain what ‘Brotzeit’ means and what do they promise their customers.

Brotzeit also had a selection of red, white and sparkling wines, available in glass serving or by the bottle. But that day, I was thirsty for something else…

I’m sure, by the look of Brotzeit’s bar, that they have what I’m looking for…
The bar inside Brotzeit

My brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and husband opted for Paulaner bier, of course…

But my mouth was watering for my usual classic frozen margarita. They didn’t have the frozen type that I like (awww) so I settled for their classic crushed ice margarita…
Anyway, I still had a margarita and that made my night.

Margarita at Brotzeit

We had this big pork platter for dinner. Mix of pork knuckle, pork sausages, pork belly, roasted pork and meat loaf.

Here’s another view. Notice the cute brand flag on top of the bone?

The side dishes…

My dinner plate, pretending not to each so much but I actually had a few more helpings after this. Good bye to my diet plan for that day…

Lunch or dinner with my husband around won’t be complete without him ordering an extra something for me. This macaroni and cheese was damn good, quite addicting, in fact.
Good dinner, good margarita at a cozy spot inside Brotzeit was a great ender for that week. This restaurant is worth going back to, and also a nice place to hang around with friends. Cheers!
Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant in Mid Valley is located at the Ground Floor, along the same row of Maybank, Chili’s and Delicious.

Colmar Tropicale + Creative Painting Kits for Kids and Kids-at-Heart!

Spending time with my son and doing creative stuff is one of the highlights of my everyday life. Whether we are building cars with his lego-like toy, writing numbers, coloring or simply doodling cars on paper, it’s a joy and blessing to be able to spend quality time with him despite being a busy working mom.

A few weeks ago, my husband brought us to Colmar Tropicale in Bukit Tinggi. It’s a French-themed village and resort. Once you see the facade of the village, you’ll immediately feel like you’re in a different country, free from the hustle and bustle of KL life.

Colmar Tropicale: French-themed village and resort, Bukit Tinggi

White swans at Colmar Tropicale

Within this beautiful place, my son and I stumbled upon a small shop where you can choose clay figures and paint it. There are several guests inside, and both young and old were captivated by what they saw.

Creative Painting Shop inside Colmar Tropicale
Do you know who’s this? 🙂
Different samples of painted clay figures

The shop was very easy to spot and remember. In front of it were these beautifully-painted horses and carriage.

My son painted a small car inside the shop. It’s reasonably priced at RM11.90 and my son painted it then and there. Paints and gloss are free, brushes and water also provided. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

My son wanted another one so I asked him to choose a painting kit that we can bring back to the hotel at Genting. He chose another car, of course. It’s bigger than the first car and came together with the paint set at RM18.

So we painted the clay car in the hotel. Aden really enjoyed the experience, seriously did his best to paint it nicely. He started with the wheels then the body. I painted a bit and tried to make it look less messy.

I used the hotel’s hair dryer and dried the car’s paint then applied the gloss. It was also a fun experience for me (so this means I’m a kid-at-heart?!). I never realized that I missed painting. And most of all, I was so happy to find that this creative activity is interesting and fun for my son.

Voila! The finished clay car in blue!

My Wine Class Experience with Sommelier Roderick Wong

I was so delighted to have been given the opportunity to attend Mr Roderick Wong’s class at Starhill Culinary Studio yesterday, 10th August 2013. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon, just a day after the 2nd Raya holiday. I parked at Pavilion KL which was busy with streams of families celebrating a great weekend then walked happily across to Starhill Gallery where Starhill Culinary Studio’s wine studio was about to engulf my senses with the aromas and taste of wines.

Themed Bubbles of the World, the class was about understanding and exploring different sparkling wines from around the world, how a sparkling wine is made, and other interesting information about this specific type of wine.

Bubbles of the World wine class by Roderick Wong
Roderick gave us this handout which I really appreciated because it contains a lot of useful information to understand the class and the sparkling wines more.

5 different sparkling wines  Prosecco, Sekt, Cava, Champagne, Sparkling Shiraz Cabernet

Roderick Wong started the class with a detailed explanation about the Champagne method of producing sparkling wines. It involves a long process with a lot of steps: harvesting, destalking, separation of juice, fermentation, blending (assemblage/ coupage), second fermentation, ageing, riddling, disgorgement, dosage, recording and wiring. Roderick said this is already a simplified version of the process so we can easily understand. OMG, so the actual process is even more complicated than this? Seriously, kudos to those winemakers!

Roderick also shared that a lot of people often mistake Champagne for other sparkling wines and are unaware that sparkling wines are not the same as sparkling juice. Champagnes are only produced in the Champagne region of France and are governed by very strict rules to be allowed to put ‘Champagne’ on their label. No other region or country is allowed to use the put ‘Champagne’. But due to the extreme popularity of Champagne as probably the best sparkling wine, some people assumed that any sparkling wine is called Champagne.

Some people also thought that when somebody says sparkling wine, it is the same as the ordinary sparkling juice available at the supermarket. The truth is there are a lot of other great sparkling wines from other countries and regions aside from Champagne in France, such as: Cremant from other regions in France aside Champagne, Spumante from Italy, Cava from Spain, Sekt from Germany, Cap Classique from South Africa and more.

Roderick also gave us a helpful list of information to what ‘Brut’ and other words mean for wine.

Opening a champagne or sparkling wine bottle can be tricky so we must be very careful when uncorking one. Here Roderick demonstrates how to uncork a bottle without letting the cork fly or pop loudly. It takes an expert skill, I believe, and I wouldn’t dare to open one! Apparently, most of the accidents in restaurants/ bar come from flying corks!

We started with a Laurent-Perrier Champagne (yum). It’s wonderful to see it bubbling on the glass.

Pouring Champagne

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles. I had to catch a photo before all the bubbles disappear!

Champagne and its bubbles on my wine glass

Here I was, tasting the precious bubbly from Champagne…

And here’s my good friend, Jen, sniffing a Cava (sparkling wine from Spain), the 2nd wine for the class.

Pouring the 3rd sparkling wine – Sekt from Germany…

And probably the most interesting one I saw and tried was a sparkling red wine – Shiraz Cabernet from Australia…

All the 5 sparkling wines from around the world: Champagne, Cava, Spumante, Sekt, and Sparkling Red. I personally liked the 3rd wine – Spumante from Italy.

The class wouldn’t be complete without some canapés…

Roderick Wong is a very articulate, knowledgeable and approachable sommelier (wine expert). He answered our questions happily and with some interesting personal stories as well.

This wine class at Starhill Culinary Studio was truly wonderful and memorable. Not only were we able to sample great sparkling wines but we really learned a lot of useful information about this beverage which is viewed by many as a luxury drink.

Kudos to Starhill Culinary Studio and to Mr Roderick Wong for hosting such an amazing class. We’ll see you again soon!
