How often can you hang out with a beauty brand’s team to share your personal thoughts and experience? Neutrogena recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with a fun session of sharing and pampering among “Neuwomen”

I’ve been converted back into being a Neutrogena fan a few months ago when I tried its Deep Clean Cleansing Lotion, Deep Clean BlackHead Eliminating Daily Scrub, Deep Hydrating Mask and Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock. I’ve known Neutrogena since I was in my teens, used their acne product and found it to be very effective. I guess with the tons of beauty brands in the market, I just lost touch with Neutrogena while going through my journey of testing different brands to suit my ‘aging’ concerns.

It was happy news to be invited to Neutrogena’s 60th anniversary celebration. This private event was an opportunity for all “Neuwomen” (a term coined by the brand for Neutrogena users and fans like me) to share their experience with any of the products.

The event started with lively greetings from lovely host, Joanne Kwan, who herself also shared personal skincare and beauty habits with the rest of us. It’s amazing how we, Neuwomen, found common ground with similar habits that we have, both right and wrong, when it comes to taking care of our skin, or at least trying to, haha!

Neutrogena brand manager, Grace Teoh, talked more about each Neutrogena skincare range and what concern each one addresses. Grace encouraged us to share our experiences and feedback about the products that we have tried while she listened intently to what we had to say.

Neutrogena had a guest speaker, Cindy Teh, a beauty specialist and makeup artist, who gave more advices and tips on how to properly use skincare products. Cindy also conducted a pampering demo where she showed best techniques step-by-step on taking care of the skin. To ensure the efficiency of the products we use, it is very important to apply each one in the right order and in the right way.  
A lot of women nowadays want everything to be fast or 3-in-1 or even 7-in-1. But as Cindy reiterates, skincare is just like cooking a dish. You cannot dump all ingredients in the pot and expect it to the taste the way it should. It has to be done step by step and in the right order; otherwise, your dish wouldn’t taste right. With this, I totally agree. In the morning, I do skip some products because I’m in a hurry but I still use them step-by-step. At night, I apply my full range of 7 different items, which I religiously do as a routine. To be honest, I’m surprised when some people say that it takes too long to apply beauty products when in my 21 years of doing this (I started skincare at 13), it will only take between 10-15 minutes each time. Like Cindy, I also apply my products while watching TV at night; whatever show my son is watching. I’m a working mother so I have to manage my time in taking care of my almost-5-year-old son after work, study with him, do some house stuff, do my blog which involves taking photos — editing photos — writing an article, then spend time again with my son, get him to bed, wake up early to get him ready for school while I myself also get ready for work. But I still allot 5 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night for my skincare routine. I think that at this age and technology, it’s a matter of time management, or rather task management, that we all should learn. If we want to keep our skin healthy and youthful, we need to work on it, don’t we, ladies?

The Deep Clean range is best known for its cleansing efficacy, with different items that provide solution to every cleansing requirement, from makeup removal to blackhead elimination. I’ve tried several items from this range and each one is a great product that never fails to fulfill its promise of effective cleansing. Another product that I raved about was the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock. This is seriously a MUST-HAVE for ladies. It works great on the face and body, works great with makeup, doesn’t leave a white film, is not sticky and contains SPF50. What else can I ask for? Oh, I have 1 wish for this product: that it eventually comes in a flip top cap to save me time in the morning to unscrew and screw back.

Neutrogena came up with a variant for those with sensitive skin called Ultra Sheer Pure-Mild. Love the all-white with silver accent packaging (yeah, yeah, I’m a sucker for good presentation huh).
Cindy also conducted a makeup demo session (yep, the ladies were all eyes and ears on this one) where she revealed artist tips and tricks. Did you know that you can make your lip color stay longer with tissue + foundation + re-application of lip color? After applying your first layer of lipstick, dab it with a tissue then apply powder foundation then reapply the lip color, and voila! It will stay longer.

There were other activities like nail pampering session, video testimonial taking, which allowed the ladies to enjoy that Saturday afternoon even more.

Held at CANVAS photography studio, Neutrogena’s 60th Anniversary was a fun-filled session with fellow women who share similar skin and beauty concerns. I think that it’s really amazing of Neutrogena to ask for and listen to what consumers have to say about their products, whether good or not very good. I had a great time discovering skincare and makeup tips from experts, and I did enjoy sharing my thoughts with other women, too.

Brightening my skin has now become one of my aging concerns. My continuous exposure to tropical weather and driving without full black tint have done their fair share of giving my face dull areas and dark spots.

The mask sheets are neatly packed in a hard plastic case. The individual sheets and the case itself are in soft pink color. The words “Pearl mask” are in metallic silver print, giving it a touch of elegance and the feeling of “brightening”.

The back of each pack contains clear instructions on how to use it. I know that most of us are already aware of how to apply the mask but I appreciate it when brands make a conscious effort to ensure that a customer or user will apply a product properly.

Each pack is also stamped with EXPIRY DATE, which is a plus for me. As an end user, I want all my beauty products to clearly indicate expiry dates and life after opening.
So how do you use the Sephora Pearl Mask:
1) Remove the mask from its sachet. The sachet comes with an easy tear cut so you just rip it open from there.
2) Apply the mask on your cleansed face.
3) Take off the mask after 20 minutes. No need to rinse.
* Apply 3 or more times a week for ideal results.
How do I look?

Compared to other masks that I’ve used before, this one is a bit thicker but not uncomfortable on the face. It’s just a bit harder to adjust the holes and opening to fit properly but it’s manageable. I normally lie down while waiting for 20 minutes to finish. I’d probably watch with my son or read a magazine while waiting.
The skin feels soft and smooth after use of the mask but I don’t expect it to immediately show results of whitening and brightening with just a few applications. To me, this is just meant to complement my whitening skincare regimen but not expected to make significant improvement.  Overall, it is a good mask to use 3-4 times a week while I’m using skincare products to address dull and uneven skin tone.

Shizens Awards Prizes for Stand Firm Stay Firm Photography Contest

It was out of passion for photography and interest in the subject that I participated in this contest. And guess what? I was one of the lucky winners.

In April, so that was around 3 months ago, Shizens proudly launched their Stand Firm Stay Firm photography campaign. The “Stand Firm Stay Firm” campaign aims to display the outer beauty of women while also revealing their inner strength, which serves as an encouragement for them to stand firm within our society. It was an online contest where customers and fans stood a chance to win prizes by expressing their creativity through photos that display inner strength and outer beauty.
Hundreds of people submitted entries for the campaign, both for mobile photography and photography enthusiasts. And in the end, 10 finalists were selected/voted from each category that vied for grand and consolation prizes. I was so happy when I learned that I was one of the 10 finalists under photography enthusiasts.

My entry was this photo of myself with my precious son. I had a great time taking this photo with him, as he was very participative and supportive of what I was asking him to do.

Nowadays, I really pay attention to moisturizing not just my face and neck but also my body. Aging takes its toll on other parts of the body, too, so I must make sure that I try to get most of it taken care of well.

I do suffer from flaky arms and legs once in a while, mostly because I’m lazy or rushing during the day to apply lotion after bathing. I only have enough time to do this at night, before going to sleep. I’ve been using body butters before going to sleep because it works well in moisturizing the skin overnight, especially since we sleep in an air-conditioned room.

This butter comes in a transparent jar with airtight cover, making sure it is protected and will last longer. The jar reminds me of food container and I know that I can recycle the jar after I finish the product. Nice reusable packaging.

I love the butter texture that spreads easily on the skin. Since it is a body ‘butter’, it definitely leaves a film of butter moisture so I won’t recommend this if you’re going out on a sunny day, unless you have ultra dry skin. But this is perfect for night use and you’ll wake up to smoother, softer skin all over your body.

I’m a fan of supplements and health drinks. I believe that maintaining our health is not as simple as eating good food. It was a fun and meaningful event for fellow butterflies and me. We learned a lot of scientific information about health and beauty in general from Dr Syid. I was really impressed at how the doctor was able to explain and share his knowledge in a very engaging manner where all of us were ‘all ears’. There wasn’t a dull moment while listening to the doctor. Most important was that we had a good understanding of why he formulated these products and what makes these beneficial to us and our loved ones.

I excitedly unwrapped and unsealed my new Egyptian Magic Cream, looking forward to know what the celebrities are raving about. The cream itself reminds me of petroleum jelly, but the Magic Cream is more solid and not very sticky like the former. The color is of light yellow wax, without fragrance or scent. It just smells of clean, fresh oil.

How do you use it?
Step 1 – Scoop out the balm
Step 2 – Gently rub the balm on your palm
Step 3 – Apply on desired area
Just to show you how the product looks like (I didn’t rub on my palm), I scooped a small amount onto the back of my hand here. At first, the product itself seems very solid but once it gets in contact with the heat of your fingers, it will melt naturally.

Upon rubbing it onto the skin, here you can see that my hand has a film of moisture. The Egyptian Magic Cream is a great solution to those with dry, chapped hands. I’m the type of person who constantly needs hand cream, especially after washing my hands or the dishes or any activity that involves getting my hands wet. My hands easily get dry but applying this magic cream on my hands at night before going to sleep does magic!
  
Of course I gotta try it on my legs, too! Since it claims that it can be used on the body, I have to test it. I also tend to have dry skin on my legs and it can get very itchy and uncomfortable. But applying EMC on my legs calms down the discomfort and moisturizes my skin well. If you apply it during the day in this tropical weather, it might feel a bit oily so I use it at night before I sleep. We use air conditioner in our room so I really need to apply body lotion to bed. And the Egyptian Magic Cream does a great job in keeping my legs (and arms) hydrated through the night.

Dior and Women’s Weekly present Makeup Masterclass Workshop

What do I expect from a makeup workshop? Let’s see if this one passed my expectations…

I’ve always been interested to attend makeup workshops. Although I’ve been wearing makeup since I was 16, starting with simple eyeliner at first, I know that there are new techniques, tips or tricks based on latest makeup trends and technology to learn. So when I discovered that the Malaysian Women’s Weekly and iconic DIOR are hosting a makeup master class, I got excited and I quickly signed up! How often would I get a chance to have this Dior experience?

Like a lot of ladies who fall in love with French designer brands or all designer brands, I am also mesmerized by Dior products. I don’t have a lot of it, though. My only Dior product at the moment is a Dior Addict lipstick. There’s just something about the luxury of owning a designer item that appeals to us. And I do have respect and desire for Dior skincare products as well…one day, I will have more of those…one day.
Guests were welcomed by an array of delicious, healthy breakfast (you can see what we ate on the latter part of this article). Dior Chief Makeup Artist, Matt Ng, conducted the makeup master class together with his team of makeup artists, in Hilton Kuala Lumpur.  It was a beautiful Saturday morning and all of us ladies were excited to hear what Matt had to share.

Matt began with a step-by-step guide in preparing the skin for makeup. What some people forget is that the condition of our skin affects how makeup achieves its best. On this portion, we had the chance to try and apply Dior’s luxury skincare products on ourselves, a choice between Capture Totale and Hydra Life. Since I go for anti-aging, I chose Capture Totale while those who preferred hydration used Hydra Life, meant for moisturizing the skin.

I loved that we were all provided with a Dior mirror each while we conduct our own ‘pampering’ or skincare application. And we also have a handout or booklet to follow Matt’s tips and to write some notes.

I really loved the Dream Skin, which is an anti-aging treatment that also works as a skin perfector. It works instantly and over time to make the skin more youthful, to reduce spots and redness, and to minimize pores!

Dior Capture Totale Dream Skin

One of the disappointments I get with some workshops is the condition of the products to be used directly on the face. I don’t like testing products in a workshop that are obviously ‘old’ or have been used as a tester for a long time. I believe that if a brand really wants consumers to have a good experience with their products, it is a MUST to showcase products in good, fresh condition. But guess what, during this workshop with Dior, the products were mostly NEW, unopened ones, especially for skincare. I’m impressed.

When it comes to applying makeup at a workshop, I’m not really comfortable with sharing makeup tools. Say that I’m fussy or whatever, but I’d rather be safe and hygienic than sorry and infected. A lot of skin diseases can be transferred physically and I also wouldn’t want other people to get anything from me, if I do have something. This is why a daily brush cleanser is important for makeup brushes. But contrary to my bad experience, Dior executed this workshop flawlessly. They provided makeup brushes or disposable tools like cotton buds and spatula for everyone. This is how a workshop should be.

So we continued with the workshop, going through application techniques for primer, concealer, foundation, skinflash, eye primer, eye shadow, eye liner and mascara. I probably missed something, we had so many exciting products to test. I fell in love with Diorshow Maximizer, the lash-plumping serum.

Matt also revealed their new IT collection with limited edition colors and, of course, the new Dior Addict Fluid Stick. This new lip item is a hybrid of the best-selling qualities of Dior lip products: lipstick, lip gloss, lip stain and lip balm. You get that pop of color, a touch of gloss, the comfort of lip balm and the long-wear of stain. I’m not a fan of lip gloss because of the sticky feeling but this fluid stick feels great on my lips.

To complete the look and overall appeal, we also sprayed Dior perfumes, a choice between Dior J’Adore and the new Dior Addict EDP. I chose the latter.

Did this workshop pass expectations then? YES, it did, beyond. I congratulate Dior and Malaysian Women’s Weekly for planning and conducting this workshop successfully. To me, this is workshop done right. The brand and products were presented very well and aligned to what an iconic designer label should be. Guests were treated as premium customers with good food and good environment. Products, testers and tools were all in good or new condition. No hard selling, just focused brand presentation and experience. Even the parking fee at Hilton KL was settled by the team for us. And to top it all, for a small workshop fee of RM60 per guest, we received all that plus a goodie bag worth over RM100.

Fight pigmentation with Clinique Dark Spot Corrector & Brightening Cream

My concern for my dark spots and uneven skin tone has brought me to test Clinique products for the first time

With the kind of weather that we have in Malaysia, it’s quite inevitable to face the dark truth about having bright, sunny days — skin darkening and pigmentation. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not ‘dark skin’ per se that I’m worried about. I believe that every woman is beautiful in her own skin, no matter what color. The ultimate question…DOES CLINIQUE WORK FOR ME?
I know that the Clinique Dark Spot Corrector needs at least 4 weeks to see results on dark spots but I wanted to check my spot improvement in as early as 2 weeks. I am patient but I am also excited.

It is a small improvement but there was improvement in 14 days! So, YES, Clinique products are working on my skin. Take note that I am using the dark spot corrector and brightening cream together with a sunblock product.
