I am very cautious of being exposed to the sun. My colleagues and friends would sometimes tease me of being a ‘candle princess’ or someone who would melt under the sun. But my experience as a brand manager for skincare products, which also included sunblock brands, has given me sufficient knowledge of how the sun’s UV rays can damage the skin in various ways. It’s actually not the darkening that I’m concerned of but premature aging that can lead to wrinkles and other conditions, uneven pigmentation and, worst of all, the possibility of developing skin cancer.
Applying sunblock is part of my daily routine, right before I apply makeup. As such, it is important that I use a product that does not leave a white film because this will mess up how my foundation color turns out. The problem with a lot of sunblock products is that ‘white film’ and the sticky, heavy feel that it leaves on the skin.
I tried the Neutrogena® Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF50+ PA+++. The name “ultra sheer dry-touch” makes it catchy. I find this a good choice because it indicates that it can be used for face and body. What some of us might forget when applying sunblock is including our arms. Remember that while driving or riding in a car, our arms get exposed to sunlight through the car windows. Don’t be surprised but some UV rays can penetrate glass.

This sunblock really has ultra sheer and dry-touch properties. Even if the product color is milky white, it turns to clear, unnoticeable color when rubbed on the skin.

Here you’ll see that this brand ‘X’ leaves a white film and looks sticky. But thank goodness Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunblock does the opposite.
When applied on my face, you’ll see that you can barely see the difference between with and without sunblock in terms of my skin tone. Because Neutrogena Sunblock is sheer and dry to the touch, my face looks the same before and after.

Every morning after clear lotion or essence, massage evenly over face, neck and arms, apply 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. When going swimming or activities with long exposure to sunlight, apply the sunblock on your body including the legs and re-apply frequently to maintain protection.

THE PACKAGING
Elianto Colla White beverage mix comes in individual sachets neatly arranged in a box. The sachets make it convenient for travel and easy to use. You can easily tuck it in your handbag to drink within the day. I just hope it came with a small cut on 1 side for easier tearing instead of using scissors to cut it open.
The ingredients and contents are well indicated on the box. But for the benefit of more consumers, I think it would be great if the benefits of the main ingredients are indicated: glutathione, collagen, olive extract and hyaluronic acid. I’ve managed skincare brands and supplements before so I am familiar but some consumers may be quite new to these, especially glutathione.
HOW DO YOU DRINK IT?
Instruction on the box says: Dissolve in 200ml water (room temperature) and top up with ice cube. BUT I find it quite hard to dissolve it simply in water by normal stirring. During my first few days, I followed the procedure of dissolving it in water.

I received a tip to use a shaker instead and it worked better. So I recommend that you pour the contents of the sachet into 100ml of room temperature water. Shake the shaker for maybe 20 times then add another 100ml of cold water, if you like cold drinks like me. You have the option to shake it in 200ml of water then add ice cubes but I find it troublesome so I just do a simpler way.

You only need to take it ONCE a day, which is great, an hour before or after meal. 
THE TASTE
The taste is good, very citrusy and easy to drink. It’s just like any fruit juice and it’s good that this beverage mix doesn’t have any medicinal taste to it. It comes as very natural.
THE RESULT
I do notice a wonderful change on my complexion. My skin is clearer and brighter. It feels healthier and firmer. Another great thing is that my skin is more balanced; I don’t have oiliness on areas where I used to continuously remove excess shine and retouch my foundation. My skin looks and feels better.

My current Neutrogena Collection
I’ve been enjoying my Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleansing Lotion for more than 3 months now and have started testing out more products from this US brand. This time, I’m sharing my experience on Neutrogena Deep Hydrating Mask.
Honestly, I’m not a big fan of masks. I’ve tried a lot of different brands before and I’ve been mostly disappointed than satisfied. Some masks are just not proportionate to my face. Either they’re too big or there’s just too much mask fluid. When the mask is too big, it’s hard to place nicely on the face and there will be too many creases. When it’s soaking wet, the fluid drips down my neck unless I squeeze it a bit but this feels like wasting something that’s supposed to be applied on my face instead of going down the drain.

Neutrogena Deep Hydrating Mask
I haven’t used masks for more than a year now but decided to try Neutrogena’s Deep Hydrating Mask. Some of my fellow beauty bloggers were raving about it so I decided to give it a shot.

The mask is neatly folded inside the pack. Unlike some masks, the Neutrogena Deep Hydrating Mask is not soaking or dripping wet. It was easy to place over my face. There were still small creases but these are acceptable ones. Not the oversized folds that I dealt with before.
And so for 15 minutes, I lay down on the bed, relaxing, watching a show with my son. Voila! After removing the mask and massaging the remaining mask fluid into my skin, there was noticeable good change on how my skin feels — well hydrated, soft, smooth and fresh. Although most of these won’t be visible on the picture below, there’s noticeable reduction on the red areas around my face. My skin also had a healthy glow after my 15-minute Neutrogena mask treatment.

After application of the Hydro Enhancing Lotion, the skin is now well prepared for the following skincare products.

Shizens SHUI
Shizens SHUI comes in the same elegant gold and pearl color scheme as the other Hydro products but SHUI has a screw cap instead of a pump. The bottle has a double layer of white and clear acrylic, which is also evident in the screw cap. Even without a pump, dispensing is very controllable and the liquid is easy to pour on the palm.

The product itself is also water-like in viscosity like the Enhancing Lotion. Using the palm, it is delightful to apply on the face. Some prefer to apply serums or essences with the palm or fingertips since there’s no wastage left when using cotton pads. And it’s nice to feel the product from skin to skin. This essence is definitely one of my favorite skincare items now.
SHUI acts like an enzyme to prepare your skin to accept other nutrients easily. By activating the cells, it will improve the skin blood circulation. The more rapid the blood circulation, the easier for the skin to detoxify the negative substances such as pimples, oil seeds and etc. By replenishing the missing nutrients, skin will be restored to its best texture, tone, and luminosity while strengthening its immune system. Shui detoxifies negative substances and replenishes nutrients to make the skin healthy and flawless.
SHUI is enriched with the Ganoderma Lucidum extract, which comes from a type of mushroom known as Ling Zhi (in Chinese) or Reishi (in Japanese). The mushroom has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries. The extract, also known as the “medicine of eternal life”, inhibits the formation of melanin, so this means brightening efficacies for the skin.
How to use:
After applying the Enhancing Lotion (or your normal toner/ lotion), dispense SHUI onto your palm or on a cotton pad.  Apply all over the face, pat gently.

Shizens Replenish Nutrient Expert (RNE) comes in a square-ish jar with the same gold and pearl color as SHUI. The jar features the double-layer container elegantly (yeah, I’m very amused by the nice pearl and transparent layers of the containers huh). It also has a secondary cover after the cap for better hygienic purposes and to prevent the product from spilling to the inside of the cap when accidentally kept upside down.

The cream itself has a light peach color, not your traditional white or off-white color for a moisturizer. Surprisingly, for its yoghurt-like texture, it was not greasy at all and doesn’t make my face sticky. During the day, it blends well with my sunscreen and liquid foundation. I love how it makes both my face and neck feel supple even after my first overnight application. Amazing. This is a must-have-stock moisturizer in my vanity cabinet.
Various botanical extracts were used in the formulation of Shizens Replenish Nutrient Expert. These botanical extracts synergize perfectly with each other to deliver the best result to the skin and stimulate the collagen production and restore elasticity of skin. It contains natural herbs that are proven to have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-oxidant and healing properties. So what’s my overall VERDICT?
O.M.G. This regimen is amazing for me. I’ve felt the difference in just a few days. It is not easy to show the improvement on the photos but I think most important is how a person feels about her/his skin. Within 3 days, my skin feels great, feels supple and smooth. Within 7 days, there’s improvement on the texture and clarity of my skin. My pores are less noticeable and there’s reduction in redness on some areas of my face. Waking up to refreshed skin is also a great plus! Now, even if I had less sleep, my skin still looks clear in the morning as long as I don’t skip my regimen in the evening.

Well, this is totally new to me. I’ve never tried any Shizens product before, not even their very famous mascara or lip products. Not that I didn’t want to try but I guess I’m more comfortable with brands where I can do beauty shopping at my own pace and time. When I have really made up my mind to purchase a certain item from a brand’s beauty counter, yes, I do approach one. Or when I was doing competitor checks while I was still managing skincare brands. But, most of the time, I prefer going around and exploring different brands and products myself with less intervention from beauty consultants until I ask for it.
With special thanks to Shizens, I had the opportunity to try some of their products and what I’m about to share is a revelation. I do respect the brand but I wasn’t quite sure if the products are suitable to me…before.

Being a skincare addict, I’m one of those people who are particular in making sure that the first step of the skincare regimen is done right. I don’t compromise on cleansers; my cleanser should have the efficacy to thoroughly remove dirt and yet good enough to nourish my skin.

Shizens Hydro Cleanser

Shizens Hydro Cleanser comes in this beautiful gold and pearl colored bottle (you might have noticed in my previous posts that I have a weakness for gorgeous packaging). I love the color combination that makes an elegant statement. The bottle itself is a double layer of white and clear acrylic, with highlight of gold pump and gold strip on the removable cap. Pretty gorgeous, isn’t it?

The cleanser product itself is a shimmering gel with tiny reddish micro-beads if you look closely (you can’t see it here, though). With addition of water, it turns into light foam that spreads nicely on the face. I really fell in love with this item; it has a feel of soft cushion on my skin while I was massaging. And after rinsing, it leaves a smooth, lovely feel on my face, almost “babyskin-like”. There was no dry or stinging feel, just soft and tender. The scent of the cleanser is just mild and pleasant to the senses.
Shizens Hydro Cleanser removes dirt and impurities without stripping off the skin’s essential moisture. It helps in increasing the moisture level of the skin to make it hydrated, healthy and radiant. It is gentle, non-irritant and suitable for most types of skin. 
How to use the Hydro Cleanser:
Pump a pea-size amount on your palm. Add a bit of water and rub between your palms to create light foam then gently massage all over the face. Rinse thoroughly. (For those who use heavy and waterproof makeup, like me, it’s best to use a makeup remover/ cleansing oil or lotion prior to face cleanser)

Shizens Hydro Enhancing Lotion also comes in the same gold and pearl color bottle as the cleanser. The pump makes it easy to dispense just the right amount of the product on a cotton pad. You also have the option to use your hand to apply this on your skin if this is more convenient or comfortable for you.

The lotion product itself is a clear fluid with water-like viscosity. Like the cleanser and other products within this range, it has a mild, pleasant scent that does not linger. It is easily absorbed in the skin and does not leave any sticky residue. My skin feels clean and refreshed after applying the lotion.
Shizens Hydro Enhancing Lotion serves as a second cleanser to further cleanse the face for better absorption of following skincare products. It works to repair skin cells and decelerate aging of the skin. It contains anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties for youthful skin.
How to use the Enhancing Lotion:
After cleansing your face and wiping it dry, dispense the lotion on a cotton pad or on your palm. Pat gently all over the face. Apply day and night.

I was lucky to be invited to Dove Skindulgence campaign launch last week and discover ways to pamper myself. Dove has launched the School of Skindulgence (S.O.S.) Facebook Campaign where we are encouraged to take a pledge to love ourselves, eat right, and stay active through simple no-hassle, no fuss, inexpensive activities that we can do at home for ourselves.

Don’t panic! You can stay active with simple activities; you don’t need to go to the gym regularly or compete in a marathon! Chill. That’s the point of this campaign: indulge and pamper yourself with less time and less money, and doing simple routines. Staying active can be as easy as walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift. Yeah, I know; if your condo unit is at the 10th floor then it’s not very easy. Maybe you can take the lift up to the 5th floor then walk from there. Or if it’s not very safe, do a simple morning routine of jumping jacks. This one gets me energized during the day.
During Dove’s Skindulgence launch, all the guests were divided into 3 groups: A, B and C. Each group was tasked to undergo a certain pillar. I was with the “Stay Active” group and an instructor gave us tips on how to perform quick routines, especially when we’re at work. Those were simple neck, shoulder, hip and leg exercises. It’s amazing how small things can make a big difference.

At home, maybe you can start with some short exercises every few days if daily is too much for you. Pick up the pace then you’ll eventually have more regular time doing it!

How to participate:
  1. Log on to facebook.com/mydovebodywash to like My Dove Body Wash Facebook page.
  2. Register using an Instagram account, which will be linked to your Facebook page.
  3. After taking the pledge on the Facebook app, you will, over the period of 21 days, challenge yourself to achieve the three main pillars of Skindulgence                                    Pillar #1:
    EATING RIGHT – instagram photos with hashtags #eatright #skindulgence
    Pillar #2:
    STAY ACTIVE – instagram photos with hashtags #stayactive #skindulgence
    Pillar #3:
    LOVE YOURSELF – instagram photos with hashtags #betterthanmilk #loveyourself #skindulgence
    Note: Must post at least 7 pictures per pillar and a minimum of 21 photos in total

     

  4. Share at least one picture daily via Instagram hash-tags, #skindulgence #betterthanmilk #eatright #stayactive) with a minimum total of 21 pictures (7 pictures per pillar) in the 21 days of how you take care of yourselves at home. 
  5. The more pictures you post, the better the chances of winning.
  6. A continuous posting for 21 days is compulsory.
  7. The challenge starts on 1 March 2014 and ends on 30 April 2014. The last day to pledge is 10 April 2014
  8. For seven weeks, three winners will be selected each week based on their creativity on each pillar and they will each win RM100 worth of Dove® Body Wash hamper.
  9. The 10 grand prize winners will have the memorable experience of a 3 day/2 night island getaway to Krabi.
